Full Version: Found after motor back in

Of course as soon as I get the motor back in I look in toolbox and see a few bolts and nuts sitting there, staring at me. I have been staring at all visible areas and I am at a loss. Thought maybe someone might have an idea based on what I have done:

Pulled motor
Removed all tin, impeller housing pieces, alternator mount
Impeller
Oil cooler (replaced seals)
Transmission separated
flywheel/clutch removed

I did all the above over a year ago when I started fixing hellhole and longs and took apart more than I needed but used chance to clean everything thoroughly

So I have what looks to be the following left:

three M8 x 40 bolts
three A8 spring washers
two M8 x 20 bolts and matching M8 nuts

I was a bit worried they were for impeller (only place I remember 3 bolts) but I remember putting those on. I dont recall putting the M8x20's back into the oil cooler brackets so that might account for those two but leaves me with a really odd number of things left. I also dont remember using anything on shroud/tin but the 4 nuts and spring washers that hold it to the front of the motor.

I am really kickin myself over this and I know I could easily take it all apart and still not find any spots for these. I have been going through exploded diagrams and just lost. Its possible these were from somewhere else in engine bay or maybe even just floating in car when I got it but it was too long ago even as organized as I tried to be with it.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated

Maybe you replaced them with new? and they are extra.

I wish that was the case but I only bought new motor mount bolts and exhaust to muffler bolts.

I do recall some of those nuts being in engine compartment when I got and started cleaning it up. Does anyone know what thread nut is on intake manifold studs?

M8x1.25, IIRC.

Well when I got it there was a single carb and I bought dual IDF's and but I got all new hardware with that set. Maybe thats where the nuts came from. That plus the two shorter ones for oil cooler bracket. Now just the 3 with the spring washers.

Are there any M8x40s that go into the cooling shroud or engine tin? Excluding the 4 nuts behind the impeller, the only other things I can remember is pan head screws. I have been looking at diagrams and dont see anything else.

Not rusty. Sure they came from your 914?
Dave_Darling
Engine tin is almost all M6. There is one M8 fastener up top, and a couple of M5 or M4 under the cylinder head. The rest are all M6, and I don't think any of them is as long as 40mm.

Thanks for the replies. I still cant find anyone where those M8x40's would go.

At this point the motor is back in and just about ready to light up. Part of me wants to pull it all apart again but who knows where they go.

I suppose I will find out if they are missing from somewhere soon enough!

What would you do?

I know if I get miffed at a car buddy, I'll go throw a random handful of nuts and bolts into one of his boxes.

just went thru this process....any extra hardware that was replaced was pretty rusted (KFC'd)...deep fried...not looking anything like your above pic...

The only place the pet list 8 x 40 is the upper and lower front sway bar and to hold the bumpers on.

The 8 x 20, there is 1 in the parking brake lever, 2 holding the alternator swivel bracket to the shroud, 1 for the oil cooler bracket to the shroud, and the 8 that hold the mounts for the engine and transmission (2 bolts per mount, 2 mounts for the engine, 2 for the transmission).

If you open the pet in acrobat, and hit ctrl + f and search for "8 x 40" and "8 x 20" those are your only options.

I dont think I have a PET in pdf format. Can you send the link for that please?

I was looking at this again and I see on this diagram part #15 is M8x30 and it lists 3 of them with spring washers. Maybe I misjudged the size of the ones I have and these are the 3 missing. I can't tell from this diagram where they actually go and only see reference to one along top of shroud and one along bottom of shroud? Anyone know?

Maybe this is it!

#15 holds the blower housing halves together (perimeter fasteners).

You really need to be certain about the length, not much help guessing. You measure from the tip to the underside of the head (head isn't included in the length) in case you are unaware.

I'd forgotten to say there's also an 8x20 for the stock tailpipe to muffler. If you had an aftermarket muffler, maybe they are from that? -the stock muffler has studs;aftermarket often uses bolts. Are they kamax-stamped on the heads, or repa, or just some hardware store stuff?
last337
I measured them and sure enough they are M8x30s. There are exactly 3 of them and I honestly dont remember putting anything besides the nuts on the back piece of impeller housing, the impeller bolts/center bolt, alternator mount, then panhead screws on the remainder so I am pretty sure these are the ones. I dont know how I didnt see that when I was staring at it after finding the bolts.

Next question, how critical are these 3 and the two that go on the oil filter brackets? I know the 3 nuts are on the studs that go through the cooler and I know every other screw is in the housing/tin.

Thanks again for all your help! Talk about a good way to learn the parts diagrams headbang.gif

I've got a similar but opposite issue...I have a hole with no bolt...?
The two piece bracket that is squeesed around the oil cooler, the upper tab has an M8 screw into the side of the fan housing....but the lower tab with vertical hole....what the heck goes in there?
crash914
bolts to hold on the fan? uses 3 m8's
falcor75
The fan bolts are much longer, something like 45 or 50 mm.
nathansnathan
Yeah, the bolts to hold the fan to the fan hub are longer, 39 or 45mm. The only 8 x 30mm bolts listed are the 1 at the center of the fan and 1 at the top of the shroud holding the halves together, and for the tierods, but probably it's not that.

Possible that the wrong length bolt got used somewhere along the line or that you swapped 2 bolts. It's common to forget the bolt for the oil cooler bracket to shroud. I think there's only 1 for that though, along with the 2 6mm ones holding it together. Though the pet shows an oil cooler support, #5 there on illustration 114-10 that I've never seen.... maybe it's a lat e car thing? I'm thinking you mean oil cooler bracket, not oil filter bracket as the latter is held on by studs with nuts.

In response to falcor75, I think the answer is the air conditioner compressor? I think there are 4 threaded holes, 1 of which is recessed to bolt the oil cooler bracket to, The others are unused if you don't have air conditioning.

Falcor, if I remember right there is only one M8 bolt holding the bracket to the fan case and two M6's to hold the bracket together....
