Found this in a Swedish mag from the mid 60's, they present the new Porsche 911 (named as 901) and show a picture of its engine. The text presents it as a 6-cyl boxer but clearly it is a 4-cyl version of the 6-cyl boxer.
I did not know there was a 4-cyl (prototype?) version at all, maybe it was ment for the 912?
(It would have done well in the 914 as well he he...)

Excuse me looks like 3 carb troats so it should be a sixer , I did only focus on the number of spark plugs and did only see 2 of them

I met a guy this weekend at LaCanada cars and coffee that had two 356s there. They had chopped 6 cylinders. Guy cut off two cylinders and made a dohc 4.

The 20-blade fan and double mufflers are interesting.

I recall seeing an article in Excellence or Pano or ?? where they talked about the development of the 901/911 Six & that there were several iterations of it, before the final accepted version for production. So this may be one of those prototypes.

Look up "The Polo", for a 4 cyl., ohc air cooled engine. There is also the "Fuhrman" engine, genuine Porsche (Type 547) & extremely expensive. Big pic is the Fuhrman & little pic is a Polo.

The current PCA Panorama magazine has an article about a restored 912 prototype and there is a discussion about Porsche's choice of engine during the 912 development. It states that a four cylinder version of the then new 2.0 OHC six was considered, but never pursued due to cost, development time, and the fact that it would have a 1.3 liter displacement, which was not considered ideal.
