'75, side shifter. Shifts well, but sometimes a bit stiff going into 1st or 3rd. I'm still a bit new to 914s, so don't know what's normal or needing attention in these things yet....

When rolling to a stop, getting into 1st gear is no problem. If at a total stop, sometimes need to clutch and fish to get it in, and then seems like it's at the very end of the throw and barely engages. Ok, this is not a modern full-synchro xmission, but... what should I expect as normal vs. what needs attention?

Mine does this a bit too, particularly when it is not fully warmed up. I had a '92 Mustang that did it and the shop told me it was because of bad synchros. Maybe someone else will offer a fix that you and I can both benefit from confused24.gif

1st I would check to make sure you are not hitting the end of travel for the shifter.
Then make sure all the linkage and bushings are snug. those set screw pins can come loose at fire wall joint and back end of the shift rod too.
I normally don't shift to 1st while moving. Why? engine braking is for cars with whimpy brakes. Not to mention tough on clutches.
Oh welcome and enjoy your 914 journey.

howz ze oil my friend?

my experience, fill with swepco and a lot of those little quirks will go away.
assuming the tranny is otherwise in good working order, linkage adjusted right and bushings are tight ...

I'll double check the fluid and adjustments. Thanks.

FWIW, I'm not engine braking into 1st, just noticed that if I pull it into 1st right before a stop with clutch in, it drops in fine while things are still rotating. Once at a dead stop, have to sometimes clutch a couple times to get it into 1st.

I have the same thing.. There's this little tiny nitch in the bottom right corner of first that sets it properly for my car... don't know if that's normal.

What is this swepco? Where can it be found?

Adjust your linkage below the shifter mechanism in the tunnel. I have found that a 15 minutes there can make some good improvments.

Fluid as Andy said, seems as though any other 914 I had never seemed to have any when I checked.. Set screws at the firewall (where the rubber cover is under the engine) and the one where the rod meets the transmission - Next would be bushing condition.

But if it still does it after fixing the bushings, Swepco fluid, clutch adjustment and linkage adjustment then its time to install a new synchro on 1st. Pretty easy to do even with the tranny still in the car.

Gear oil. Seems to have a special cachet among drivers of old Porsches. Some don't think it's any better than any other gear oil, but it was very specifically recommended to me by some very good mechanics. So I use it.

You can get it from, among other places, here:
