It was good, wasn't it? For the first three games they played like schoolgirls, but the last two like warriors, no pun intended. Excellent game and fun to watch.

Yes agree.gif piratenanner.gif

EDIT!

ADDED - Excellent Match vs. Japan - really on their game for that one! first.gif

I find it interesting that our USA Soccer & Rugby teams are top ranked worldwide, while the mens' in same are middling at best. I think it has to do with less other pro sports opportunities drawing off top athletic talent for men.

At least the USA Eagles Men's Rugby 15s side (team) finally beat Canada this year & we're now ranked above them for the upcoming Rugby World Cup in England this Sept/Oct!!! piratenanner.gif

Off to the finals gals!

Cheers! beerchug.gif

I will watch England VS Japan tonight. One of the two will get to meet the US Ladies in the final.

Wish I had recorded US VS Germany. Heard it was a killer game.

My nieces got tickets and drove up from Massachusetts.
They got home this morning at 7am.

Well worth the trip they said..

Crossing the border coming home was a major traffic jam though.

I am a soccer fan, Germany has an awesome team, USA deserved the win, one of the best matches ever. Those athletes on both teams played their hearts out, the U.S. Girls played outstanding and I thought the ref did a great job of letting them play but still controlling the match. Kudo's to your team all you yanks!

Ah, poor Elliot, you don't know what you're missing. It was a really good game, and during it I was thinking there were almost certainly a lot of Americans in the stands who were seeing a really good, competitive and emotional game for the first time, and were probably astounded.

It was excellent, take our word about that.

Elliot Cannon
Yeah, I love it when they kick the ball back and forth for hours and the end score is 0 to 0. Excuse me, nil - nil. What excitement! What emotion! What... ZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

You didn't see the game, did you? There weren't any zero-zero ties. When I lived in Brazil I tried to explain American football to them. They didn't understand it, couldn't see how a bunch of overweight guys falling down and jumping on each other in big piles was all that entertaining. I told them there was strategy involved, like chess but physical. Out of respect they accepted that there might be something there they didn't understand. I never tried to explain baseball because it's too boring even for me.

One of the nice things about soccer is that it's played everywhere, so when you have tournaments it isn't city against city, it's a competition of country against country. We see that maybe in the Olympics but that's about it. It adds a dimension that's difficult to over-estimate, is very cool, and we don't have anything else that's the equivalent. I guess you'll need to take my word about that, but I'd like to point out that there are a few billion people around the world who already understand. I suppose it's POSSIBLE they're all wrong, but...

And hey, the U.S. women are in the final, playing against the team that beat them four years ago. This is incredibly cool, they're doing heroic shit representing the U.S. and playing their hearts out. Even if you're unimpressed just a little respect for their effort would be nice.

Elliot Cannon
I've got plenty of respect. I just don't like watching it.

It was a good game. Depending on the team / game I feel the same way as Elliot about soccer, basketball, tennis etc. where it seems like all there doing is kicking, hitting or throwing the ball back and forth. But this game and ones like it is pretty awesome too watch. There was very little back and forth. It was aggressive skills, stealing the ball from each other to get the goal. Lots of talent and skill from both teams. My wife loves soccer and my daughter (17) has played soccer most of her life and is now on a club team. Sometimes my daughter gets on a good team and when they are evenly matched with another good team, then its fun to watch, other times its like watching paint dry.

As I mentioned before, my niece drove up to Montreal to see the game.
In the car was a woman from Brazil who was on the side of the U.S. since Brazil got knocked out of the finals on Fathers Day,
a woman from Croatia who was for Germany
and my niece who is a pale white Irish girl from Massachusetts.
Can't imagine them coming back through the U.S Immigration..
A woman with a Brazilian accent, a woman with a Russian accent and my niece with a Massachusetts accent..
Both of the women with foreign accents are Corrections Officers in N.H.
Must have been interesting to say the least.
I have absolutely no interest in Sports generally, but did watch the game to see if anyone I knew in the stands got arrested..
Some foreign people really take the game too seriously..
Everyone got home safe and they were glad they were there to enjoy it in person.

Last time I went to visit my cousin in Argentina all his friends were on my case- "Aren't you ashamed?" I replied, "Ashamed of what?" They said, "Aren't you ashamed to be an American man?" I said "No, why do you ask?" "Because of you're women, they are better futbol players than the men." Then they all laughed & I had to smile & take it. Remember guys, it is the #1 sport in the world. biggrin.gif

I love it! Must have been a great game. Sorry to have missed it.

Great game! I get a chuckle out of the soccer haters. There's non stop action, no time outs, and the game officials aren't involved in every single play of the game. Argue with the Referee too much, you get sent off and your team plays a man down. The "American Pastime" is boring to me, as well as teaching our youth to bad mouth authority, but I'm not going to bag on it.

For years I watched a clip of Pele taking a shot from mid-field. It was an international game so cameras everywhere, and the view from behind the goal shows the goalie realize, to his horror, that that damned shot was on goal and was gonna go in, you can see him stiffen, turn, and run like a rabbit caught out in the open, with terror in his face. Pele just missed, wide right, but just the attempt was magnificent. That clip is awesome, and I always admired Pele for taking the shot. So when Lloyd tried that same shot AND MADE IT I just plain broke down with admiration. Admiration for her audacity, and then, when it went in, for her skill. That was really really special, and I think at that moment the poor Japanese women knew it wasn't their day, it was over. Man what a game.

naro914
^^Agree!
We went out to dinner and thought we would watch some of the game. Got there at 5 minutes into the game and it said 2-0! What? am I reading that right? Yes, it was USA, Yes it was Japan and Yes it was live....WOW...Then...3-0 then....

Our women are excellent players. If you watched the game and know anything about soccer (futbol for the non-Yanks) you know they had complete control of the game. They passed well, defended well, set up plays well, and were very aggressive on the offense - something they really hadn't done all tournament. They were by far the better team on the field and they deserved the win!!

Congratulations Ladies!!! Well Done! flag.gif

Then Perry Clone, try the "other UK Football" - Rugby Football - in it's various flavors: Union (15 a side), League (11 a side) or Sevens (7 a side - going to Olympics where the USA is the 2x defending Gold Medalists in 15s from 1920 & 24)!

It's as much a contact a sport as our Football, but as non-stop as Soccer, & you mouth off to a Ref & you're off (the Soccer Refs put up with too much crap), & requires smarter players who can play offense & defense immediately & continuously!

Good Sportsmanship is expected & demanded in Rugby, & in college & club play it is the tradition for the home team to host the visitors at the Pub for food & beer & camaraderie & a bawdy songfest at "the 3rd half" - rather than going off on a destruction binge like soccer hooligans, or going off hating the opponents until next game/year in American Football.

As the Brits say/said: Soccer/Football is a gentlemen's game played by hooligans, but Rugby is a hooligans game played by Gentlemen!!

I played all 3 sports over he years since youth, but much prefer the Rugby over Soccer & Football, although I do like to watch them too for key games of my alma maters & hometown teams.

The Rugby World Cup is the 3rd most watched event worldwide - behind the men's soccer Football World Cup & the Olympics - & the RFC is coming up this Sept./Oct. from jolly ole England, with the USA ranked 12th - but at least we're now ranked above & beat the Canadians .... finally! biggrin.gif

Give it a watch too, you might like it once you get how it's played (the announcers & teams do some good explanations during breaks). It will be on NBC & their cable/satellite NBC sports network.

The Soccer Gals did great! first.gif
... they had a big LA area celebration for them yesterday! piratenanner.gif drunk.gif
