I was given a stash of old magazines and in the box was a Road and track issue that did a write up on the 72 916. First imported by Peter Gregg of Brumos Porsche, I do believe this is the car George "the hussler" Hussey currently owns.

I dont know if this has been posted before, I did do a brief search.

Nice article, I'd like to see the test on the 911E and the 914 to see how they compared back then

$15K was a lot of money in 1972. The Ferrari Dino 246 was $14,500 back then.

R&T didn't performance test the 916, but it should have had a significant performance edge over the 911E since it has 25 more horsepower and nearly 500lbs. less weight. The 2000lb curb weight specification for the 916 is suspiciously low, however, since the ordinary 914-6, as measured by R&T, weighed in at 2195lbs. and the 916 has bigger brakes wheel and tires and the heavier 916 transmission.

For comparison, the Dino 246GTS had 195hp, but weighed 2910lbs. and did 0-60mph in 8.0 seconds.

The 916 like /6s makes you wonder what could have been if Porsche had stuck with the program.

Re: weight - Does the 916 have the fiberglass lids front/rear? I know it has the fiberglass bumper that HAVE to save a lot of weight.
It would be interesting to have someone with a real 916 put it on the scales and weigh it, a nice bonus would be a chassis dyno just to see what it puts on the ground!

Per an inflation calculator, $15,000 in 1972 is $83,734.68 in 2014.

Not over the stock 72 bumpers, they don't. The early bumpers don't weigh a whole lot--you're thinking of the 75+ bumpers, which are quite heavy. I don't know what the FG 916 bumper weighs versus the stock 70-72 bumper, but I bet the difference isn't that huge.

saves probably 20-25 lbs for the pair. Even the late bumpers only weigh 80/pr.

It says right in the article that "with alloy wheels and fiberglass front and rear bumpers, a savings of 70lbs is realized over the 914/6"

Who knows how accurate that is though. Maybe George wants to chime in? You know how much your car actually weighs George?

I don't know what it puts on the ground, but I know what the exhaust sprayed on my hood and windshield while staying with it through the Tail of the Dragon.
I don't have an expensive paint job, so I chock the clean up to the cost of the experience.
