we need to do an artist point run for Nord in august. I'm not hip to the PCA schedule's or whatever else is going on. so help me out. I have a vintage motorcycle thing on the 15th,and on the 22nd, otherwise open. It's pretty simple, meet up, drive to the mountain, BS,go home. we don't need a BBQ, dinner, or anything. I'm thinking the 8th/9th. what say you all?
Randy

Good thought Randy. This will be a topic at breakfast on Saturday after the Walker's swap meet in Seattle. Should get a clearer idea of dates then.

I think about Nord a lot. Miss that guy.

We talked about it this morning over breakfast and came up with Saturday Sept 19th as a date for the run. Our thoughts were that we should choose a date each year that lands on the third Saturday in September. We should still have good weather and the tourist traffic dies down after labor day. We know not everyone will be able to make it this year but this way it gives a chance to also put it down on the calendar for next year. Please let us know if this works and what help is needed to organize it.

that makes a lot of sense. Nord typically did it in august, but it often turned into a cluster as everybody was busy. I really don't care when it is, I'm just glad we're talking about it. I'm in for sep.

Ok let's set it up. Start time, meeting point, breakfast before? Beers after?

Nord ... what a great guy! I remember of him often.

Sept 19/20 ARGH! I was planning on attending the Maryhill Loops hillclimb with NHA.org the same weekend.

Can we close the road to Artist Point and have our own PNW Teener Hillclimb?
rhodyguy
I'll be in Utah. Have fun driving up the hill.
jsaum
So it seems like the 19th of Sept doesn't work for most people if there's a better date please speak up.

So I think it's only me and Greenie so far who are planning to do the Nord Artist Point run on the 19th. Anyone else going?

I have been thinking about this lately and was wondering when the group may be doing a run. Thinking of taking the 14th off if there is a local meet up, and I am in for a weekend drive as well.

Great I think that makes three of us so far. We'll keep the thread going and post times and meet up places soon.

icon_bump.gif Any more interest in this than just 3 people?

I met Nord a few years ago at a Mission race and we talked about his 914 mentioning that I owned one 30 years ago.....and I told him that his car inspired me to one day own another. Well, a couple weeks ago I bought another and I know he'd be proud of me having sold my 1966 Mk1 Cortina GT after owning it for 25 years.
It really sucks that he's not around to see it!

I'd be up to joining the group for a run even if my car isn't fully sorted yet.....heck I'll drive my 240 Volvo!

It now looks like I will be in town on the 19th, so I'm in.

Great looks like we're getting a few more guys to join us. I'm not that familiar with the area if anyone has suggestions for a spot to meet up at and one for beers later please let us know. Nord always made a great breakfast so if there's a good breakfast spot that might be a good starting point.

Thanks,
Jsaum

Bummer I would love to do that run again but am out of town. I remember the last run there with Nord, I believe it was Troy who did a 180 right in front of this lady driving a minivan who was going down the hill in the twisties. Scared the S out of her and she actually drove all the way back up the hill to the parking lot to ball us all out LOUDLY for driving too fast! She was pushin 450# it was embarrassing but kind of funny at the same time.

Good times! driving-girl.gif

We are making this run on Saturday! driving.gif

As usual we are planning this down to the smallest detail. welcome.png

The plan at the moment:

(James) JSaum and myself will be meeting at the 128th street Exit on I-5 (south of Everett) at 7:30 AM Saturday Sept 19th.

We plan to stop for a quick breakfast in MT Vernon and get up to Nords house for departure to Mt Baker sometime around 9:14.

Unless someone can loan me an MPS for a 2.0 L I'll unfortunately be driving my taildragger.

Be there or be square!
RRietman
OK i'm in as well. how about I pick you guys up at the casino in Deming. 10ish? I'm 20 minutes away from there. call me when you are 30 min out.

I am SOOOOOO bummed I'll be out of town for this. Nord was a great friend and this is a great tribute to him and his enthusiasm for this car and the folks who own & drive them.

Have fun and be safe out there. Troy: watch out for mini-vans! headbang.gif lol-2.gif

SOME FUN NEWS!!

Nords son Paul will be joining us, he will be driving his 1974 914 !!!
greenie
I spent some time working on my green machine today and it is Mt Baker ready again! driving.gif

Looks like I won't be making it after all guys. Engine noise appears to be a valve seat issue. She's down until I can confirm otherwise.

Turns out 914s don't melt in the rain...they do leak like hell....especially if the top is in the trunk. If Nord was watching he was cracking up at us driving around in the rain.

After an old fashioned country breakfast in Mt. Vernon, Nord's son Paul, James (jsaum), Greenie and Yours Truly paid a visit to Nord's old house before heading off to meet Randy (RRietman) at the casino in Deming. We decided the run to Artist Point would mean increasingly poor weather ending in the clouds so Randy said he could lead us on some fun roads at lower elevation. For the next hour or so we toured some tasty twisties worthy of ballads singing their praise. Local knowledge is a wonderful thing and Randy knows Whatcom Co. backroads intimately. At last, we emerged on famed Chuckanut Drive which winds along a bluff above Puget Sound with views of the San Juan Islands in the distance. We stopped to take in the scenery for a bit before moving on to a small town watering hole in Edison. It was a fitting day for remembering our friend and spending some time with his son who is getting acquainted with his Dad's 914 and making it his own.

Marc, curt, james, paul, dave, thanks for coming out to remember Nord. I know he was with us on sat. and probably cussing about not having the cajones to take on artist point in the rain. I think we made a good day of it anyway.
this is going to be an annual event in memory of Nord. the Nord run to artist point. I'm going to remind everybody fall of 2016.

Marc, glad you enjoyed the drive. more where that came from.

Reviving an old thread and fond memories. I went cruising for ice cream and couldn’t resist these pics. This is the kind of place Nord would love.

Thinking of you man, you left us too soon.
