Stupid question but is the engine code below missing a digit? I thought TIV engine numbers (at least on 914's) had 7 digits following the "EA" code. Is that "dimple" at the end a zero, or is this not a 914 Type IV? I've searched for Bus Engine codes, but can't the equivalent of the P914 site. Or am I taking the seven digit thing too literally off the P914 site? This came out of a '72, but I don't know if it was the original engine.

It's correct. It is a '72 1.7L. You'll need the certificate of authenticity to determine if it is the original engine to the car.

Confirmed, Steve is correct 72 EA motors ran from 00001 to 0057000.

Ok, thanks fellas. So I took the 7 digit thing too literally. Just wanted to make sure as I didn't want to make any assumptions.

The stamp at the end of the numbers is a tiny VW logo.
