I went on Ebay to check on some stuff and I thought I would hit 914 stuff for fun. What I found was beyond belief !!! The stuff was junk by most standards.


$135 Tech Spec Book $35 new
$100 Nasty Ashtray
$15 used brake clips $3 each new
$315 used relay board with no cover
$1100 used 2.0L SSI Heat exchangers

I agree. When I first bought my 914 and started buying/selling parts, I couldn't believe the price discrepancy between here and eBay. I think people just say "it says PORSCHE so it must be expensive "

I sell just about all my parts for $20 or less.

I would rather see another 914 on the road then try and make profit.

I even try and go the Freebie route when I realize I have more than one spare that I will probably never need. I am planning to post some Freebies this weekend.

ebay is nuts! I listed 2 pairs of seat rails on ebay ( just the ones that mount to the bottom of the seats) for $35. No takers, so I drop the price to $25. 2 guys got into a bidding war and they sold for $125!!! Much easier to find parts here and the members are fair to deal with. I have some send me some small parts for free.

I've noticed the trend of ridiculous prices too. I was shopping for the upper rear trunk latch. It is seriously just a metal pin and a spring, I found a new one from an obviously drugged up vender asking $248, and some used ones for about $200. That's absurd! There's a guy on CL selling one for $30 but he hasn't replied to me yet. I have a 74 911, and part prices for that seem to be more realistic (much higher than my 1970 Chevy truck, but that's to be expected).

I understand the "fishing for suckers" thing, but DAMN people, the 914 isn't an ultra rare supercar. I put my 914 on hold and went back to my other toys because of the ridiculous prices for parts like that trunk pin and door handles

They are preying on the "when you need one" crowd. I only sell parts when I need to buy other parts. Keep the circle going.

I was having a hard time finding a front trunk lid for my car. One, somewhat local to me was purchased and was rejected by the owner of the body shop the car is at. A second was found in Fla. and shipped here. Greyhound lost it in transit and then when they found it, wanted to add storage fees to release it.

I was told about a place on the N.H., Vermont border that had a warehouse full of air cooled Porsche parts. I called them and they said they had at least 30 front trunk lids in various condition. I drove the 2.5 hours to get there and was able to dig through the lids and bought the best one for 200.00. I brought it to the body shop and the owner checked it over and was quite pleased with it.

I have no affiliation with them, but they had what I needed and were easy to deal with.
Price wasn't bad either.. Might be worth a try for some used parts?? Especially small parts that aren't a ton of money to ship..

I mentioned this web site to them and they said when they get another person in the office, they will start advertising on web sites.

The evil-bay guys know that they only need one sucker....

I was talking to a friend who writes the EBAY column for the 356 Registry magazine and he was saying the same thing, insane prices, but also 85% of the ads on ebay now are buy it now ads, most with silly prices.
I said, "Guys asking triple, hoping to get double"

He quoted me on that. Unfortunately it's true.

There a heap of there stuff on there,carefully described "as the best in the world",no matter if its worth it or not,some of the used stuff is real rubbish.
The only thing is that if you buy from there listings you can get your money back unlike if you buy direct.
I've had got buys off Samba and Pelican ,what really annoys me is people selling a reasonably priced part and pumping up shipping for profit

I'll add a quick thought here, as it's 2AM and I can't sleep:

I'm creating an Excel spreadsheet of the maintenance history for my recent rustbucket purchase. This is a car that will need some serious work, but as you go through a thick stack of receipts, you see all the work that was done and all the care taken of the car. This is a $1400 base model project that I'm going to spend some time on and turn it into a cute orange go-devil; nothing fancy but still a remnant of an analog era. It seems a real shame that folks will take cars that are probably more complete than mind, sell off a few good bits, then chuck the rest.

So...this is back. Which category would it fall under?

Maybe, but I don't see holes in your roof and you have some wheels that would actually be worth something.
