100 mph Deer strike at Summit Point right in front of me....head & neck go over to track right, hindquarter to track left. Torso through windshield into passenger seat (luckily empty). Blood, guts, glass bits all over the driver & interior of car wth roof peeled back a bunch. Went to track store and bought a full face helmet on the spot. BTW, his car had newly rebuilt engine 2 months prior, now looking for a roller....

I'm scared to watch the vids. Coincidentally yesterday morning someone just in front of me had hit a pretty large young buck in Malibu Canyon. 45-50mph. It wasn't dead and was attracting a small crowd, flailing in misery. I felt bad for the poor, dumb animal but then got to thinking about seeing this thread's title and how horrifying and dangerous it would be to hit one in a smallish car. I was driving my truck that day...

What's scariest to me is that in the in car videos I've seen (including the first one embedded in the post above), you just can't see the deer coming. That surprised me initially, but I've seen several in car videos showing pretty much the same thing. It's not just that the car is going too fast to do an evasive maneuver - you just can't even see the deer coming until the last second ...

I've seen way too many of these videos at Summit Point. Personally I won't go there until they deal with this.

when we built our vintage car we were going to cut the roof off
I still think about it sometimes

but once around 2002, I saw a competitor loose a rear wheel on a 944 club racer.

I dodged it, but saw it bounce and hit another car in the windshield

I think about this every time I consider cutting my roof off for weight

Agree. The thing with deer is they startle and bolt or change direction suddenly. They're pretty dumb so sometimes this puts them in mortal danger. Had one do this in front of my Turbo last week. Not quite a pants staining moment but definitely a good pucker.

Definitely scary! One nice safety precaution at Road Atlanta is the back straight has 9 foot tall fences on both sides of the track...maybe something that can be considered at problematic tracks. Evidently, Summit Point needs to address this - I won't be driving there.

9 foot fences will definitely help, but most deer can clear 10 easily without leaving a lick of their fur behind.

That very well might be true but I've been driving at Road Atlanta for over 14 years and I can't recall a single incident with a deer strike. We have LOTS of deer in Georgia too...something is making a difference. Maybe GA deer are smarter...
