35 Porsche 914s. 1 Year. 1 Challenge.

The 914 Build-Off Challenge is on. What is the challenge? Finish building your 914 in 1 year. What is the deadline? 914 Day - September 14, 2016.

What is the prize for the winner?
914rubber.com has pledged a 1st place prize of a complete refund of all money spent on parts purchased from its company during the Challenge. Other prizes have also been pledged and will be announced soon.

Even dropping out of the Challenge early will get you a prize. rick 918-S, from Area 51 Werks, has donated an awesome welding jacket for the first build to drop out.

Challenger Discounts from Sponsors:
914rubber - Challengers receive a 20% off of all parts.
Automobile Atlanta - Challengers receive a 15% discount off of all "B" parts (rebuilt parts and ones they make).
Jeff's 914 Wiring Harnesses - Challengers receive a 15% discount for any replacement 914 Wiring Harness on the website for the build car. The discount period ends December 31, 2015.
Restoration Design - Challengers receive a 15% discount off of all of the 914 sheet metal that they produce. The discount period ends December 31, 2015.

What is this thread?
This is the main Challenge Contest thread. Challengers will post progress "reports" on their builds here. Challengers also have individual threads for their build where they post more details and people can comment on the build.

What is the criteria to participate?
a. Must include removal and installation, or installation of the engine.
b. Must include significant rust/accident repair, and/or paint and bodywork.
c. Must include significant interior work.

How are the builds judged?
1. Finishing on time - The car must be "done" and on the road at the end of the build.
The car must be road worthy, including titled, registered, and tagged.
2. Completing all build tasks, as outlined at the beginning of the build. This is determined by the person doing the build, but, roughly set out at the beginning of the build.
3. Quality and workmanship of the final car.

Who judges the builds?
The participants (we call them Challengers), and the members of 914world.

How is the judging conducted?
There are three preliminary rounds, and a final round, ending as follows:

First Round - October to January
Second Road - January to April
Third Round - April to July
Final Round - July to September

At the end of each round the Challengers vote on the builds. The voting is conducted using a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best), based on the following areas:

A. Progress
B. Difficulty
C. Quality and Workmanship

In addition, the members of 914world vote on the build's via an online poll. The Challengers and 914world members' votes will be tallied, and the builds ranked based on the votes. No builds are eliminated at any preliminary rounds.

Final Round of Voting
At the end of the Challenge, the participants and 914world members, make a final vote using the same system as above. The tally of the final votes, along with those from the 3 preliminary rounds, determines the winners.

If you want to read all of the rules, you can do that here.

Sponsor Info
914rubber is offering Challengers a 20% discount on all parts. Restoration Design is offering expert advice and assistance (contact Peter). Automobile Atlanta is offering Challengers a 15% discount on all "B" (parts they make, or a rebuilt part).

I agree. Until we figure it out I will delete it from the title. I actually like it better short anyway.

That is up to admin. That is a lot of green threads, though. We asked that participants use the thread title - Build-Off Challenge - (Whatever they want)

So that their threads would be easier to find.

I don't write much because I don't have a lot to add, but -- geez -- this was a good idea. I'm really enjoying following all the builds. My only issue: I'm rooting for them all to win .....

Thank you to Stevegm for setting this up and thank you to Mikey914 for sponsoring it!

You have so much energy to take on all the work and details to make this thing go.

Bottom line is that a lot of 914's will move forward, going to be fun to watch things emerge as there are always some people that are so talented and just need a little push to make them flourish.

Here we go!!

Yes. The shirts are almost done being designed. We have a few other ideas, too. But, I don't want anybody to get "Challenge fatigue." We are working on shirts and posters - for the Challengers, and some will be prizes, and will also be available for non-Challengers. I was also thinking it might be cool to put a DVD or YouTube-type video thing together. With 30 builds it might be an interesting story. We also kicked around putting a coffee-table style book together, highlighting each build and how the challenge plays out. Still thinking about that. But, I think it would be cool to do a book that tells the story of these builds. Just ideas.
stevegm
CHALLENGERS:

A lot of great work happening on these cars.

If you haven't sent me a picture of you with your car, please email it to me. We are also in the process of doing profiles of each build and need all of your info, if you haven't set it yet. You can check out the Build Profiles (as they get one and posted) - Here.

Challengers are required to post an update at least once per month, explaining what they did that month. But, you are free to post them more frequently - weekly, etc. It is up to you. When you do post an update, it would probably be helpful to post a list of what you did, and then the pictures of the work.

A couple people have asked about vendor discounts. Here is what we have right now:
914rubber - 20% off of all parts (Mark sent a code to Challengers).
Automobile Atlanta - 15% on "B" parts (rebuilt parts and ones they make).
Jeff's 914 Wiring Harnesses - Challengers receive a 15% discount for any replacement 914 Wiring Harness on the website for the build car (All orders much be placed by December 31, 2015.

Documenting your build is a very important aspect of the Challenge, and there will be substantial bonuses available, based on the level of documentation. Here are some ideas:

1. Photographs of the work as it progresses.
2. Receipts (although not required for the Challenge, very helpful for other 914 owners doing work on their cars.
3. Written explanations of the steps taken to complete work.
4. How-to style stuff - photos and step-by-step instructions to complete work.
5. Video - if your interested in shooting some video we can help accommodate making that available. Just let me know.

May I suggest including the year in the title/logo "914 Build-Off Challenge 2016 " or similar? I think you have started something here Steve that will not be a one time event. Kudos to you for the encouragement and friendly competition idea.

Given any thought to holding an event to present the Challenge cars and awards?

It is my pleasure to announce that 914 Build-Off Challenge participants are offered a 15% discount from Jeffs 914 Wiring Harnesses for any Replacement 914 Wiring Harness on the website for the build car. All orders for Challenge cars must be placed by December 31, 2015 to receive the discount. Best to each of you, looking forward to seeing the results of your efforts. Individually you are all winners for accepting the Challenge.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks. That it is a very generous offer. If you email me your logo, I will add it to the list of sponsors. The graphic artist is adding - 2016 - to the logo now as he works on a t-shirt for the event. Initially, I thought about awarding the winner at Okteenerfest next year (assuming that was ok with Steve, Bob, and Mike). But, that was before I realized we would get so many cars. I never thought we would get more than about 3 or 4. So, with 30 or so cars spread all over the country, it makes doing the awarding at a single event difficult. An Eastern event would probably be too far to travel for most west coasters, and vice versa. But, I figured we would see how it plays out. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks,
Steve

I'd buy one...heck, I'd buy 4 of them, the wife and kids asked why they don't have 914 shirts yet?
stevegm
Two people emailed me this week and asked to be added to the list of Challengers after the deadline. After talking it over, we decided that given the spirit of the Challenge (to get 914s on the road), a couple days late wasn't too far behind to participate. So we added them. We have 32 cars now. I hope no one objects.

I have family there , should be able to drive that far idea.gif
- it was already suggested to have that get together at the Okteenerfest in Sept. - maybe there should be 3 or 4 regional get togethers the same week, have some press coverage for PCA etc, - NC is a pretty central location for FL, SC, NC, TN, GA, VA, -we just had 65 cars come in from everywhere on the east coast. Maybe eastern Tennessee. Not sure where all the cars are located,

We have 32 cars now.

I will look at the location of the different builds and see if we can put something together that would work well for everyone. It would be a neat event - Have as many people there with there cars as possible, give out the awards, etc. It would be cool.

Restoration Design has stepped up and is giving all Challengers a 15% discount on the 914 sheet metal they make. In fact, they are offering this discount to everybody. The discount period ends December 31, 2015. Thank you Restoration Design (time to order some parts).

Great news that RD is offering to all the builders, very generous of them! I'd love to join in the madness but the doctor says I've still got another month before I even start trying to get out of the wheelchair- it's been a very long 4 month process for me. I'm getting to know way too many Physical Therapists but they've made all the difference and now to see that I get a discount on sheetmetal too gets me even more psyched to get back to building!
Good luck to all you loonies participating in this Challenge- you make reading through the site SO much more interesting and the skills displayed here are an inspiration! popcorn[1].gif

A few more teeners have asked to be included as participants. I spoke with some of the sponsors and we are going to add them. But, we have to close this off officially. So, speak now or forever hold your peace. biggrin.gif

I would like to be included. My build thread is here: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...=257306&hl=

I can change the title if needed.

Save the 914 is donating an event shirt to each Challenger, with the revised logo printed large on the front, and the Challengers names, location, and year and engine of their car on the back (concert shirt-style). The shirt will be a light color (maybe a sandy beige). Challengers, please PM me your shirt size and address. The shirts tend to run a little small. Please keep that in mind when choosing your size.

EDIT:
A couple people have asked to order extras, or asked to buy one since they are not participating in the Challenge. We can print some extras if anyone else wants one. If so, please PM me your info. We will do them at $15 plus shipping ($19.99 total). Paypal: savethe914@gmail.com

So is it or is it not open to all members so far as the discount goes? I'm not sure when I can start on mine due to my current condition but if I have to, I'd like to know if it's necessary. confused24.gif

I'd just ask about it when you order. I am sure whoever you deal with will be familiar with it. If not, let me know and I will email and find out.

OK, so I guess I am the first one to post an October update...
I did not make a lot of progress this month for the usual reasons, but more on that later.
What I did get done was: Repair/weld up the weather strip channel for the front trunk, grind out more seam sealer and begin the rear trunk floor repairs.
Spots like these.Click to view attachmentClick to view attachment

Then this happend and I had to stop work on the car and gather my rosebuds while I may.. could... what ever. Salvaged and installed for a warmer winter.

After money this is the number one killer of this project... other projects that jump ahead in line.

I did not receive any help from vendors this month, but my fingers are crossed that next month I can get the media blasting done.

Update for October.

Car is still across the street at my friends house. Volvo taking longer to finish..dropped brand new piston wrist pin on ground, scratched the piss out of it, broke my piston ring compressor....capacitors for mill computer blew up, in process of converting to new motion controller (complete re-wire and programming of machine)

Not sure if the following is progress or not for the 914.

I bought a Passat/Boxster transmission to adapt to my 1.7 Type IV, the following pics show some drawings I'm doing to mock it up...I will be designing a billet aluminum flywheel for the ring gear and clutch friction surface I have drawn up also.

Oh yea, have not bought anything from a Challenge vendor nor have I received help or financial assistance (Dave Darling gave me a hard time for not getting the car running 1st, I expect no less from those I've known for so long!)

I fully expect to come in at least 2nd to last place with all the other awesome builds and I'm okay with that MDB2.gif

October Update: Extreme Budget Makeover - Creamsicle Edition

Only thing 914-related that happened this month is I sold a rear panel from a parts 914 to a friend who is in the process of repairing a 914 that was rear ended. So now I at least have a few $$ to put towards my build biggrin.gif

Before I can really get busy on my 914, I need to get my '02 GTI running. Have been in the (slow) process of replacing a bad turbo and miscellaneous hoses and undoing years of poor maintenance by the PO. Once that is done, I will have a winter driver and will be able to park the 914 in the garage for some major work.

Oh, yeah... recently purchased a New Beetle Convertible for my daughter (shhh, she doesn't know about it). Will be a Christmas/birthday gift. Problem is, it needs some repairs before we give it to her at Christmas. blink.gif

I have too many projects dry.gif

OCTOBER UPDATE: for BACK IN BLACK(i'm renaming my thread this with the addition of the AC/DC song of same name as my official music) yep, that's all I've done-----
no, actually what I have accomplished is hooked up wiring, put in new fuel lines, fuel filter, pump, tank etc.

I bought the car as a rolling stripped down project, so normally I would not have done that but with this contest its not a bad way to go. it saved me a lot of time and trouble, but as discussed on Jeff B's recent tread asking the question which is worth more or which would you prefer, its a hard thing to sort thru all that stuff done by someone else, so I have spent hours sorting thru bags of labeled stuff, and some not labeled, digging into the car to look for rust(of which I have found some, nothing show stopping) and assembling a list of stuff I need to order from restoration design.
-began chipping out the tar board in the floor pans, found some rust along the edges of the floor, but mostly just surface stuff so far. right hell hole had a bad attempt at previous repair, including bad welding and calk!,
-wiring: wow what a mess - this takes the most time. Ordered some schematics, a member here sent me a PDF which I blew up, sent to local print shop, had them printed and laminated so I don't need my glasses to read them!!
- pulled wiring back thru to sort, hook up the fuel pump. because I need to know what I have in order to know if I am doing major or minor engine work- i'm really close to trying to crank it up so that I can then check for leaks, check compression etc. ( car is a 75 with 1.8 L-jet.)
- what I have sourced and ordered so far:
1. new Mahle wheels from member here: - will be shipped today or tomorrow(soon as I pay him wink.gif )
2. New Distributor with installed optical points from Hot Spark - I read here that several others were using this distributor and very happy with the performance.
3. ordered vac hose, bought pump, filter and gas line and hooked all that up
4. new battery
5. I bought 914rubber.com bumper tops for back dating the bumpers- this might not happen, as I was contemplating a full stock build and restore: which poses the question, should I or should I not? because I cant find a set of decent nice chrome bumpers!!! , SO for anyone out there that might have a set let me know, otherwise it will have to just sell these toppers, and put the stock stuff back on (which maybe I should do)
this car is a mostly clean it up, make repairs and reassemble mostly in a stock fashion. Not custom.
Goals for this month that I believe I will have met:
- rewire , sort thru that- test run motor, strip floor pan and assess all areas for rust
- order parts, source proper wheels for car, sort thru parts stash,
- sourced a local Porsche shop that will help with next months goals:
-start car, run it and asses motor for needed repairs before dropping it out and cleaning it up
-threw out almost all interior parts except seats!! it was all trash
** so new list of parts needed to go forward: hell hole repair, battery tray, new dash and all new interior including door panels, back pad panels, white vinyl for back , doors, seats, - need to find out what carpet the car would have had stock- it was originally a stock black outside and white interior???

Next months goals: minor welding repairs of rear firewall, hell hole, replace battery tray to original location, fix 2 other body rust spots, prime etc
- pull motor and clean, put all nice new stuff on it,
- maybe finish minor body work have either touched up, or full respray- this is not decided yet.
- * will need all new exhaust so that decision will come later, but, I have very nice 1.8 heat exchangers with triad exhaust on my 75 2.0 copper car, so I might do a swap and buy the dual outlet SS. set up from Tangerine racing and put it on the Copper car. Decisions, Decisions!!!
Pictures will be posted on my thread, but yea, we've made some progress!
major parts orders are coming from 914 rubber, PMB, Restoration Design and Auto Atlanta.

Oct 2015 progress
Still working on the drivers side fenders, bought some new Soft Sanders sanding blocks and they really helped smooth things out. The Durablocks are pretty good but the Soft Sanders bend more. I got the fenders to about 90% and had to walk away.

Taking too much time being anal about every little pit right now. So I pushed it out of the shed and turned it around, to work on the other side. The shed isn’t really big enough to easily work on both sides. but I can roll it over on the cart to get to the other side for some work.

Earlier I had just put some spray bomb primer on the passenger side just to keep the flash rust at bay, so I sanded all of that off to start the bondo work on the passenger side flares. (no Metal Surgeon here)

Next I have to make this look pretty and smooth.

Caught a couple warm days and it was really nice to work on the car outside for a change. Plus I could give the shed a good vacuuming.

Stripped the doors to take to the media blaster and found he will be out of town on another job for a month. That is going to slow me down, since I probably won’t get the stuff done until around Thanksgiving. I wanted to get started on the doors, and trunk lids. Something nice and flat to sand on for a change.

Stripped and epoxy primered the engine lid and found my rain tray had gotten warped and cracked up while in storage. Used a heat gun to get it straight, then epoxy glued the cracks. It turned out pretty good.

Diassembled my seat mounts and sent them to the powder coaters along with the rotor dust covers. And took my seat tilt aduster levers to my buddy’s Chrome shop. I know chrome isn’t for everybody but I like it on some things.

Shipped my calipers and prop valve off to PMB for a rebuild and ordered a bunch of related brake parts.

It didn’t seem like I got much done until I started writing it down. The weather will be an issue here soon and will screw me up as far a painting goes. I may have to just start installing some stuff while I continue to work on the body. Downside to that is the sanding dust gets everywhere, even though I tarp it off with old sheets.

That's about it for now.
