First, thanks to all that have posted in the past concerning speedometer issues. I had the common problem of my speedometer going to zero after driving a few miles.

I traced the problem to the right angle drive. My drive, however, looked different than the ones for sale ($50 to $178 depending on the source). I was able to take mine apart and fix the loose gear that caused my failure.

Here's a few photos:

The little gear had disconnected itself from the shaft. I just peened it a little to reattach it. (hit the end with a punch and hammer) The shaft is free to spin and move in the housing so I supported it with a flat blade screwdriver in a vice before I peened it. I stuck the screwdriver into the housing on the far left in the photo directly above. I'm sure the real mechanics out there have fixed these and probably used better methods.

I searched but didn't find any info on the inner workings of the right angle drive. I hope this might explain better one failure mode of the speedo.

Jim
