Hope all are doing well. It's been a busy year here. I finally got around to having a Pole Barn/shop built. I'm out of room in my 3.5 car garage so this new shop will be great to actually get some work done in and be able to use my garage to park in. Should be another week or so before they finish up. The contractor had to stop working due to the high winds here. They already had the wind destroy a long roofing sheet. Trying to lineup the sub-contractors to finish up insulation, electrical, gas line install, and concrete. I was lucky enough to get a contractor to do this build this year. The 4 others I called where looking to start in the spring/summer of 2025. Here's a teaser picture for now. I'll add a few more once it's wrapped up.

Hi John,
Yes, the Celette bench will be moved to the new shop area.
I'd like to get it mostly setup before the snow starts to fly here.
The next two days here are gonna be in the 70's so they planned on concrete for today.
Hopefully get things wrapped up by the end of next week.
The electrical and plumbing will be the last thing. I'm still waiting on the utility co. to get things squared away at their end.

The new shop is coming along. The stone finally got here and now waiting on the mason to come out to install it. Electric is going in and waiting on the electric comp to tie everything into the grid. Gas line is run and heater installed. Interior is being finished.
The overhead door should be in this week and hopefully installed next week sometime.
The snow has arrived and have a few punch list items that need to be addressed. I hope to get this all wrapped up here in the next two weeks.

Hi John,
I did not do the heated floors. A buddy of mine has it in his 40x60 shop and loves it. He also has a few wall mount units to supplement heat/cold when the doors open. He works in his shop just about everyday so it works for him. He also lives in an area where there's no NG supply so propane is his only choice for now. I just didn't see the need for it on mine plus I'm running a NG heater that warms up the 48x36 floor space pretty fast. I'll use the saved money towards a lift instead.

Hi Rory,
You've been out at my place. I have plenty of space out here and a benefit of living out in the sticks. lol.. Yeah I can see your neighbors not liking the idea of a shop next to them. I bet they jump out of their chairs every time you start your 6. As far as taxes go, I won't see the increase until next year and I'm sure the town will stick it to me like every other year.

I finally got around to installing my 2.7 RS spec engine onto my test stand.
She fired right up and runs strong. I didn't have to mess with the timing or carbs. Ran it to break in the new cams, rockers, and seat the rings. I ran it again yesterday a few more times to get a few hot cycles done. I'll probably run it again today then let it cool overnight. I'll have to remove the valve covers and re-torque all of the head stud nuts and check the rocker/shafts as well. This will be my 5th 911 engine build and still have my 3.4 to do yet. My org 6's 2.0/901 is shelved so at some point that will be done as well. My plan is to get a few things moved around the new shop then start on the 6 chassis. I'd like to run this 2.7/901 in my 6 for a summer then swap it out for the 3.4/915 setup.

Started with the 6 chassis repair again. Installed Ben's GT front bumper/valance combo then the NOS fender to see how thing line up. While I was there I dug out my steel GT oil cooler ducts to test fit them as well. I also started working on installing the front sway bar reinforcement plates.

I didn’t know RD would be making a steel version. If so, I’m in. I’m not using any fiberglass on my GT car.
Luke M
Sep 25 2025, 08:15 AM
I had no idea RD was working on steel GT cooler shrouds either. I purchased the steel shrouds after I tested fitted the fiberglass units and didn't care for the fitment. The only thing that I'm missing is the screen/stone guard that mounts to the nose panel. So, I started looking at the best way to install these GT shrouds and found very little info online. I looked at a few build threads from here, PMS and Pelican but with very little info/details regarding the install process. I installed a front cooler on my brothers 6 conv. 4 years ago and back then I didn't have much info to go by with so I improvised. I will more then likely redo his at a later time. With my brothers car I ended up bolting the cooler down to the chassis side using rubber mounts. Based on my research the cooler is supposed to be mounted to the underside of the shroud. I don't know how well that will work with a fiberglass shroud. Guess it'll be a wait and see unless someone can tell me real world outcomes from their use.
With all that said, I figured I'd show the way I'm doing mine for future reference. First is figuring out the placement for the shrouds so I know where to install the exit air vents. I ended up making a cardboard template then tracing it onto the steel louvered panel that I got from PMS. The lower air guide usually gets welded into place but I do not want to do that so I'm going to be bolting it in. I may install a cross brace like the factory GT cars as well. That brace would get welded in below the air guide. The upper GT cover needed some slight work to make it fit snug up against the front nose panel. This is pretty straight forward as it just bolts in. Now is where I got a little lost, I saw a few different ways to install the cooler. Some mounted to the chassis and some to the underside of the shroud. I looked at Andy's (socalandy) build thread and he mounted the cooler under his shroud.
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...1062&st=420I plan to install my cooler under the shroud as well. I made a bracket to mount the two together and ran into a cooler fitting/shroud hole issue. I can weld up the shroud holes and drill the openings to where I need them. I wish the manufacture didn't drill these holes and let the end user do that. Just another thing to add to the to do list.
I also looked at ajserrano GT build on Pelican.
https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-914...-project-5.htmlBoth of these threads where the best I could come up with as far as showing the install. Now, it depends on which oil cooler that's being used as well. I'm using the oil cooler that PMS sells. I used this same oil cooler setup on my brothers car as well.
Andy's car is using the same cooler that I have but Armondo is using the factory 914-6 GT cooler.
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=375225 I don't really want to drop 3 grand on a GT cooler so I'm gonna run what I have.
I'll update this as I move forward with the install.

Hi Mark,
SMC is where I got the lower air pan from. The upper air duct I purchased from a member from the UK. He originally purchased it from Mittelmotor in Germany.
SMC has the screen but it's out of stock. Mittelmotor makes these as well.
I don't know if all of the steel parts that SMC sells is from Mittelmotor.

Not much for progress on the 6 this week. My brothers finally got some free time to help get the shop stone wall up. Then without fail the rain moved in and now it's a wait game til next week. I did start the rebuild on a set of S calipers. I installed all new PMB pistons, seal kit, pads and hardware. Looks like I was not shipped the two O-rings for the caps so waiting on those to arrive this week.

Thanks Tom.. I've watched your GT build and it's come a long way. As you know I'm working on mocking up my front oil cooler. Putting the fitting that I got from you to use.
Gotta say thanks to Rory too for the tech help on the reusable aluminum factory fittings and the custom built tool.
Here's a few pics of the front oil cooler line install. Ben's GT lines, troutman (old school)
T-stat which uses a 911 engine oil T-stat, and remote oil filter installed before oil heads to the t-stat/tank/front cooler. Currently working on where to mount a few things and figuring out the hose routing.
I've been looking for some AN-12 ORB to metric 30mm adapters but having a hard time finding one.
These would replace the AN fittings on the T-stat. I'd like to keep everything plumbed in metric. Anyone have a source that I maybe missing ?

I'm still messing around with the front oil cooler install. I do not like the way the Setrab oil cooler fits into the GT shroud. I would need to bend the mounting tabs and slightly modify the upper and lower GT shrouds. I didn't want to spend around 3 grand on a replica GT cooler. It's a nice cooler but I could spend that extra cash elsewhere. I was checking out another's members GT build and saw he is using a PMB front oil cooler so I did a little research on that part. Looks like PMB modified a cooler to fit within the GT shroud without any mods to the shroud itself. I ordered one and waiting for it to show up. If I like the fitment of the PMB cooler better then the Setrab then I'll go that route.
Meantime I finished up the openings to the front trunk for the GT oil lines, front trunk fuel pump (late pump mod), and relocated the spare tire mount. I then spent a few hours prepping some replacement metal to fix the area under the fuel tank. See how next week goes and may get this section cut out and set up for welding.

Hi Matt,
I used a 6x15 cookie cutter with a 195/50/15 tire for mock up purposes. I'm running Boxster front and rear brakes so I would need a wheel/tire combo that would clear my brake setup. I believe that a factory Boxster spare would work but I haven't tried it yet. I'll have to borrow my brothers Boxster spare and test the fitment. If it doesn't work I may go with a 911 collapsible spare or buy a smaller tire and mount it on the cookie cutter wheel.

I am using Boxster brakes on my build as well. I am using a later model 16" spare with inflatable tire that will clear the brakes. These came on 996 turbos so will clear even larger brakes. I ended up making my own oil cooler shroud to use a cooler I already had.
