I thought I post this as a reminder.
This morning, my wife's car was broken it to via the passenger side front window while she was shopping / in the gym.
The bad news is her purse that contains driver's license, various types of ID and credit cards were in the purse.
Credit cards have been compromise already.
Bottom line, its the holidays and those that want a " free ride " will break into your car - if they happen to see anything of interest, even if its a sweater covering her purse.

True enough and sorry about your wife's experience. These low life, POS scum bags are out smashing and grabbing all over the place. Place your valuables in the trunk of your car before you arrive at your destination. These fuctards surveil an area and wait to see people hide stuff or place it in the trunk so they know which cars to hit. Typically about a 5-10 seconds a job.

The cops should be up in a tower with a scoped rifle to take these fuctards out.

My wife got her purse stolen few years ago....I think her vehicle was a target since she got out of vehicle with NO purse!

I like to store anything of value, like my computer bag, in the trunk.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Smash and grab does not work in a trunk.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I would never do that, but the wife is simply too trusting.

My folks got ripped at a Safeway north of Seattle. It was a practiced lift with a set up person and a snatcher. Their credit cards were being used before they even made it to the cash register. This is a good business for scums and druggies.

They used store video to see who did it. They were charging up next door a minute later. Police eventually got them doing the same thing. My folks flew back to Seattle to press charges and seek restitution. There was nothing to go after though.

Long story short: new IDs take a while, new credit cards become a mess, you can't get a new SSN, the stress sucks, and you just need to manage your stuff. There is no happy ending to getting victimized.

Tough lesson, but a good one for everyone here to think about.

FWIW - I just bought a 2014 Acura and I basically don't leave anything in it because I figure its about as secure as our borders with a keyless remote.

Here in Oakland, we have had a rash of window smashers. I think they are using an automatic center punch to quietly shatter windows. These guys are GOOD. I have been sitting in front of a restaurant in a quiet residential area, and cars just a few parking spots out of view have been hit, with no one hearing a thing.

My prescription is:

A) Never leave a damned thing in the car. Nothing. Not a paper bag, not so much as an envelope. All that is in there is the reg and insurance card in the glove box.

B) Never lock it. In fact, unless its raining, I leave the windows down a few inches. Come on in, look around. Go ahead, steal my reg and ins. card.

With A, its much more likely that they will not target you. B does too, with the added benefit of no broken glass.

Thats all with my Mercedes daily driver. With the 914, I tend to drive it with the top off only, and park it that way. All I have in that usually is cheapo "road tools" in the frunk, under the board in the center of the spare.

Black out your home address on your registration and insurance card otherwise the vermin might burglarize your home while you are gone.

Sorry to hear what happened. Really sucks.

Happened to my wife and me at a state park about 20 years when the temps were getting into the 30s at night. Driving 40 miles with a broken out passanger side window was no fun besides putting stops on cards, new license and on and on.

My cars have zero loose things in them.

Now the bad guys are breaking into cars and stealing the garage remotes and the registration out of the glove box and robbing the house. My remote is hidden and anything with my address is now in the trunk.

In the early hours of last Thursday morning our house was broken in to as we slept upstairs, they stole my iPad and both sets of car keys and both sets of business keys they then took my pickup, it had my wallet in it and our kids car seats and some tools, it wasn't recovered till Sunday and it was burnt out, there's scumbags everywhere!!! So ive been on a road trip to buy a new pick up, managed to beat the satnav by 1 hour 22 minutes !!!
