From my 1974 1.8

Just got my TB back from a total rebuild. Came out really nice. Done by a machinist on the Samba user name whip618 does really nice work.

Machined with bearings and seals, new Pivot shaft, new Butterfly, over bored, rebuilt TPS, All fresh cad plating, machined mounting surfaces. Pressure tested. I just put it in today, but have not had time to try it out.

Also a new seal by 914 Rubber.

Did you have this done to address a particular problem with your engine?
Also, can you loosen or remove the big idle adjustment screw, maybe showing how it selectively leaks air?

I had it rebuilt because of wear on the butterfly and leaking shaft pivots.

Very happy with the results of the rebuild.

wow thats nice, what was the ball park cost if you can say, was it overlly expensive ?
hey that 3 pin TPS is that stock for 1.8 or are you doing a FI conversion ??
I want to eventually convert my 1.7 Djet over to Microsquirt.

Looks nice, I have a 2.0 TB I need to refurbish and should do the 1.8 unit I have as well.

I figure not a huge market but something I should pursue to make some 914 spending money.

My main issue is that the throttle is 'sticky' in the closed position and so it is difficult to control the throttle smoothly. I have looked closely at it but, as yet, I have been unable to identify the offending element. Even holding it in your hand (and after generous lubrication) you can feel it stick at full closed position and have that 'snap' feel as the throttle is opened
I am interested how the throttle performs after the rebuild.

Was it a new return spring?

Not sure if the spring is replaced. He does lots of these for VW applications. Some of the sticking is due to the butterfly wearing against the side wall allowing it to over close and stick. Mine was worn in this area.

Price is dependent on the level of rebuild I think. Not cheap, but the quality and performance is outstanding. Takes a couple weeks turn around time.

Phil certainly does excellent work on throttle bodies. He also does an exceptional job
blueprinting the original type 4 oil pump, given you can supply a good core to start with.

Just got my tb back from Phil.

It drives so smoothly it is almost sinful.

The problem I had (and apparently common) is that the throttle plate would stick in the closed position and would need a blip on the throttle to disengage the throttle plate and then you could feed in the power.

Phil also added a mod -an adjustable stop on the tbspindle assy to stop the throttle plate from jamming on the wall of the tb

Now, I have to change my driving style as you can accelerate silky smooth from rest. A very rewarding result. $295 shipped to Aus.

The other plus is that I can now have the secondary return spring which goes from the bell housing tinware to the tb spindle. The secondary spring is obligatory for track use but the car was impossible to drive with one before the rebuild.

My car runs so much better after the rebuild. It just would not idle cold before rebuild. Now never stalls and idles at 900
