On the 70-71 there is a center vent in the dash top. I am currently in the process of redoing my dash and need to know how to remove the plastic part of the vent that is above the dash.

Any help is appreciated.

Are we talking about the defrost vents (windshield)? Because I don't recall any vents in the center of the dashboard.

Well, if it's the defrost vents, that's done from inside the front trunk. I'll have to check it out when I get home to give you the "specifics" on removal.

Center vent, 70-71, two small screws on the under side of the dash. If you're going to re-use it, be careful, thay get fragile.

Is the access from the front trunk area? There is nothing from the interior side as the vent sets forward of the bulkhead. I have tried reaching it from the trunk side but no way to get in there with out dismanetling everything. Any short cuts?

Nope take it apart is about the only way to do it. Yes I had 2 1970 models. they both have the center vent.

I am starting to understand why everyone is running around with a trashy dash cover. The work involved in redoing the dash is just too much. Just buy a cheap dash cover, throw it on and away you go.....

yeah....I've a '71 and you have to pull the top part of dash out, flip it over and you'll see two tiny flushed screws there. BE VERY CAREFUL when taking it off or tightening it up....ask me how I know!

I will have to pull mine out again as the plastic piece came loose at one end....probably stripped!

I am getting more depressed all the time. Are you saying that the screws do not go through to the trunk area? The are only in the dash assembly? So have to remove the dash then flip it over to get to the screws I just love this German craftsmanship. So the new dash covering will need to be installed before putting the dash back in, right?

Nope, screws do NOT go into the front trunk. Yup, pull the dash. Yes, get the new covering before you pull the dash so you can do it all at once. I'd also suggest getting any other stuff that you can take care of at the same time. If you're going to pull the windheild in the near future anyway, pull it now & replace the seal that is at the inside edge between the dash & windsheild. And don't forget the new clips for the chrome trim....and as long as you're in there....... Ah, now I see how Dirk Wright did it.....

I thought that the defrost ductwork was the same for all years.....never heard of the center one before

Thing about it is, if you buy a mint one, 9/10 times, it's as bad as what you had a month later...
