Quick and easy tool to make. Take an existing 1/2" breaker bar (mine happen to be broken) and cut a notch in it to fit trunk rod.

Pipe wrench works for me. Notice how the notch on Mark's tool resembles the jaws of a pipe wrench

10mm deep socket on a 6 inch extension
Slip socket over bar and unhook from under the wheel, slowly lean it toward the back of the car until done
Do both sides
Remove brackets which are still under tension so keep your eyes safe and hands....
Or you can just use a cut off wheel like SLITS does and cur them right in the middle....slightly more exciting but it also works.

it makes a better spring tool than a breaker bar

I made one out of a 12" crescent wrench. Just open the loop on the bottom.
About 6 months ago, I got a nice gift from Al Zim. He had two of the factory tools, and I now have one of them.
