Full Version: Starter recommendation?

My starter solenoid broke when I tried to remove the main positive cable -- the post tore right out of it. I need recommendations as to what to get.

I'm presuming y'all would recommend getting a whole starter, rather than just a replacement solenoid, correct? Should I look for a good used one, or get a rebuilt or new one? If you recommend a rebuilt one, from where would you recommend getting one? Pelican wants $123 plus $90 core, NAPA's prices are all over the place (and hard to tell what is what), and I didn't even bother checking AA. How much is a new one? Is a new one even available? How much would a good used one go for?

Thanks!

If you're going to spring for another starter motor assy., I recommend one of these:

Agree a high torque model is the way to go, there are various brands out there reaching upwards of $250 such as IMI Performance Products which is what has been on my car for 8 years or so. From what I've heard the rebuilt Bosch units are questionable in respect to longevity, but no personal experience there.

Having worked at Toyota for many years, I can vouch for the Nippondenso gear reduction starters. Very good performance and trouble free.

I went through starter issues a few years back. After getting a rebuilt one from FLAPS that failed quickly, I went this route.

Fair price, good quality. Buy this one, put it in and drive. driving.gif

No problems with a stock 1.5ps Bosch.
