Hi Guys,

Wondering if anyone has advice on how to clean up / prep the exhaust ports on the heads for new copper gaskets. As you can see in the pic, it seems like there was a leak that built up some sooty deposits. The engine is on a stand now, but it's kinda tight in there and I'd love to not remove the heads.

I've already used a flat file on the heat exchanger to insure that everything is flush. I plan on annealing the new gaskets and using some permatex ultra copper RTV sealant. Unless you have other ideas as well.

Thanks!

I would use a sharp screw driver and scrape it slowly.

Thanks Rich. I guess it doesn't need to be "hospital clean" since the permatex will fill things in, right?

I would be careful not to nick the aluminum and create a future issue.

I never use any sealant like permeates at that point...its 1700 plus degrees.

Aneal the copper gasket with a torch until it turns a different color, it makes them soft.
Hang the HE units loosely both front and rear.
Leave the rear bolt on the hanger loose.

Tighten the head bolts slowly and all together.
After all are done, then hang the muffler.

Scotch Brite pad.

The only reason you might want to use the ultra copper spray is to get a bit of tack on a ring/gasket that wont stay put when installing it.
