I need new tires for my 76' 914 2.0. I was going to put back on factory sized ones, but may do something different. Any input is appreciated.

Search for( "what size tires"). Use the quote marks. Read all you want. Hundreds of threads.

Good +1 for the stock size and look is 185/70/15. You will have to search for them though. Vredstein and Cooker Tire are the only ones I know.

In addition, there is Lucas Tire in Long Beach CA & OH (plus their sister Longstone Tyres UK - & they can get any tires there shipped here for you), plus Universal Tires in PA - are all sources for vintage tires in current production.

There is a whole nailed topic in the O&H Forum on wheels & tires for the original sizes & the minor up size Marc mentions.

Any bigger up sizes like the 195/65HR15 & 205s etc. will probably give you a speedo error resulting in a lot of "ghost miles" on the car over the actual, so use one of the Tire Rack or similar tire calculator program (IIRC the one on here no longer works).

For a reasonable DD or show cost 165HR15 (/80) the Vredestein Sprint Classic is your best bet, & there are probably local shops you can order them through near you. The Tire Rack etc. online & local tire shops have various other brands in 165R15 (/80) in S, T or H speed ratings.

Your OE tire size on all MYs of the 2.0L /4s was 165HR15 (with /80 profile, implied back then & now if not listed on tire size), & you can use today's T & still be inside the speed profile for the 2.0, the S will work, but hold down the speed to 1.7/1.8 range - esp in the heat, & V was the up rating.

The vintage guys above & at Marc's reply above - there are 3 Michelin 165SR15 (/80) XZX (lower speed rating, but tubeless), XAS 165HR15 (tube-type - maybe okay to run tubeless), & XWX 185/70VR15 (tubeless & higher speed rated) at higher prices for each, & the Pirelli Cinturato CA67 165HR15, plus Lucas sells a UK Blockley 165VR15 (/80) with a tread pattern very similar to the dogbone of the OEM Dunlop SP57 165HR15 & Semperit's M401/M601 from back in the day.

I'll let others on here advise which upsized tires they recco - if that's what you want to do instead of original size, but watch the speedo error/ghost mileage, & wider tires will also drop your mpg - if that's of concern.

Good Luck! beerchug.gif

Thanks All. Much appreciated! I'm going with the Vredestein 165HR15 Sprint Classics.
