I found this story on Yahoo.

https://www.yahoo.com/autos/driving-the-33-...-145837081.html

I would like to see someone buy, say, Restoration Design parts in bulk and crank out new ones. And maybe an early 911/912...or a 356, maybe a 550 or 904...turnkey...Am I dreaming?
JmuRiz
You're dreaming...or if they do they'll be so $$ we'll have to dream about winning the lotto to afford biggrin.gif

It is cool info though.

yes it would be expensive, done by the brits with the MGB and the E-type Jag,however the contruction of them is a little more simple than say the 356,911 and 914.
I would think the tooling cost would be a huge issue,do the likes of Porsche keep the stamping dies and presses long after a car goes out of production??.

This will give you an idea what a new MGB body shell set you back. Before importing, taxes, fees and shipping…British Motor Heritage

You may have just discovered the source for the first $200K 914! You can get a damn near original 550 clone for that though..... huh.gif
Chris914n6
A repro bare shell 60s Camaro or Mustang is almost $20k. It'd be $50-60 as a done car. Granted one could fix the engineering deficiencies and it would be rust free but that's a lot of dough for a fancy VW.

Porschetub,

Hmmm, I'm your resident Brit who's restored an E type, an MGB a 356, many 911's and now a 914. I can tell you the construction of the British cars is MORE complicated than the German cars. Things don't fit together as easy and dare I say are not as well engineered in places as Porsche; but hey that's why we love them. Buying Heritage shells is from the Heart, not for financial reasons. The wise ones, buy a car thats been restored with a heritage shell for a 1/3 the price of what the restoration cost!
If this ever becomes available main stream for the 914 this will be the way it will be.

Building an MGB/GT V8 from scratch, starting with a new body shell is a rather pleasant daydream…
Darren C
Yep, day dream...

£10K for just the shell, and the finished product £13K

Ah,the proto Miata.
A delicately rusted framework on which to draw your plans for a robust 250 hp streeter.
Still like the curves, spent some time looking at the wreck that Peter made, flipping into a ten foot ravine and the creek.
It was that close, his older brother outdoing him later in his XKE,going faster into the very same creek.
Sure, the market for retrorides is as strong as ever, what year is your favourite?
The '33 FF is a well designed chassis, has all the good stuff.

Should have been.
Niche markets, the specialty customs, make a big step when production numbers rise.

Hey guy's I have a Delorean!

I'd be interested to know how many other 914 owners have one too?

Here's me taking it around the BBC TopGear track

Hi Mark, I've had the Delorean almost 10 years now, bought it in North CA and shipped it back to UK. Believe me I've heard all the BTTF jokes!

Add the Webasto sunroof and you’d be in the ballpark. As nice as turn-key is, the advantage of building would be avoiding all of the headaches of trying to import and register an already assembled car…
