It's okay, it'll be asked now once a week for the next 20 years!

If the current watercooled /6 doesn't fit, not sure if the /4 will be any different.

The issue is width, not length supposedly.

How about a 718 cayman? Is that redundant?

Man I want one of these.............. We just gave the Saab Convertible this last summer and we both miss having one. I will likely save my pennies, sell the M3, and buy a 2018 Model when I retire in 2020... lol..... I never buy new, and never first year run, so gotta take the long view....

Two things to respond to you specifically.
You have not tried to make it fit.
Nor have I.

The six would fit, you just need to transplant some rear suspension too.

I've measured the Boxster engine and a 914 engine bay.

I was going to help the owner. I still think it would fit as long as you install the motor first. It will require installing it at a funky angle (no oil in motor) and them level it out once past the suspension points.

We talked about notching the valve covers as well. That made the owner too nervous.

The owner decided to go with a 3.2 air cooled motor instead.
