Windows 10 is now a 'recommended update' that starts automatically - Technology & Science - CBC News

Or, you can manually remove the Win 10 updater and never be bothered again.

If you do a Google search, there are several good tutorials on how to do that.

Just disabled the updater. Thanks for the heads up.

Made the mistake to taking the free upgrade about 3 months ago and sum it up, it was a HUGE mistake. So much of your OS will be dedicated to constant feeds and updates, that all other apps (like interweb, microsoft apps) just crawl. Think early dial-up speed. I worked 4 evenings to adjust settings following every tip I could find to help restore some speed. I am about 75% there but it was one helluva process.

If you have downgraded to 10, you have one month to restore to your old version then you are stuck.

Word of advice - Avoid it like the plague.

I installed in the 1st week available and never had a blip. If you are using a TV for a monitor you will have to set the sound to the TV. Settings default to speakers.

Windows 10 does not like old computers. You need the fastest processor you can afford and a good SSD.

I updated everything to W10, started with the old (6 years) laptop to test run, and it was a marked improvement. I liked it. Upgraded everything else over the next few weeks, the only problem has been the bluetooth drivers on my Lenovo all in one desktop touch screen thing is disabled, and not compatible, and Lenovo isnt helping. Other than that I have been very happy. I HATED W8, my wife had a tablet laptop that ran it and I hated it. Windows 10 is excellent so far.

... excellent at stealing your personal information by recording your keystrokes, passwords, voice commands, browser history (which sites and for how long), encryption keys, the occasional photograph, etc. and sending them back to Microsoft so they can "help improve spellcheck."

If you actually WANT Windows 10 then please run one of the following to tighten up the privacy settings as best you can. Note than when monolithic updates happen, you'll probably have to update/re-run these tools:

1) Destroy Windows 10 Spying (easier)
http://dws.wzor.net/

2) W10Privacy (much more comprehensive, but use with caution)
http://www.winprivacy.de/english-home/

3) Spybot Anti-Beacon
https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/

I see many machines in my shop with accidental Windows 10 installations that work like crap because if the computer manufacturer has drivers meant for earlier operating systems, then Microsoft uses crappy generic reference drivers. Very often this leads to slower machines and only partial hardware operation. Most manufacturers aren't going to bend over backwards making drivers for computers more than a couple of years old.

If you have Windows 7 stay with it! And then run the following telemetry prevention tool. My favorite is the Aegis script, but remember to run the script by right-clicking -> Run As Administrator the aegis.cmd file.

1) Aegis

Not true. Where are you getting this info?

If your computer was capable of running W7, then it should run at least as good, if not better on W10. People thinking of upgrading should take the extra step of verifying that drivers exist for their hardware.

There is a lot of stuff that I would disable by default in w10 which may be causing people to trash it, and skip using the Edge browser, but beyond that it's a very good and stable OS, as was W7.

Any cited references of Microsoft actually logging keystrokes and passwords?

I also found the tools you linked to interesting, but one appears to be Russian, the other German... seems even sketchier than trusting Microsoft.

Not saying W10 doesn't have increased privacy concerns, but I haven't seen anyone cite actual instances of it being used to identify individuals or go beyond the type of information probably already garnered by basic web browsing.
r3dplanet
Just don't use private browsing mode, since it isn't actually private:

Also, it's a myth that Windows 10 always runs faster. See me post above.

Yes, if you, like me, work in networking and use traffic scanners to monitor your network it's all you see. Plus the shit ton of encrypted telemetry traffic containing who-knows-what.

Also, just read the damn Windows 10 EULA.

German? Russian? Sketchy? What the hell are you talking about? The only German tool I linked to was the W10Privacy. I didn't realize that code from Germans was automatically sketchy.

I run these scripts regularly on my production machines (and certainly those of my clients) and I've never seen hint of wrongdoing. But feel free to scan the tools with a malware scanner beforehand by all means.

If anyone wants a breakdown of the EULA, here's a couple of good articles:

https://www.hackread.com/windows-10-is-spying-on-you/

http://www.techworm.net/2014/10/microsofts...every-move.html

And don't think that by using Apple products your privacy is any less violated. Apple has been doing the same thing but piecemeal, particularly with Siri. Apple says they don't sell off your information like Microsoft or Google do, but they also say that they can change their mind about it whenever they want without notice (also right in their EULA).

agree.gif I have old laptop but good bones, went from 7 to 10 and no issues, infact faster and better but there are a few issues I have that are only minor to sort,by the way I didn't install it had my eldest get her boyfriend to do it as he is an IT guy.
NOTHING made by Microshaft is glitch free.

So IT guys what are the best ways to delete windows 10 download crap for the:

1/ The expert novice:

2/ The knows a bit user:

3/ and the the complete 'puter idiot: GWX Control Panel?

Complete with a 'how to' or a link please.

If you have 8, I would totally go for the update. I have 10 on my new laptop and 7 on my big PC. 10 is very stable and seems to be pretty nice, but it is fairly large. Downside is old programs/games dont work with it.. Thus if you had 7 I'd stay with 7.
DBCooper
There's a Windows setting to ask your permission before downloading any updates, pretty simple. I'm no Microsoft fan, for the last twenty years I've gone out of my way to avoid Microsoft products whenever possible, but W-10 seems fine. I don't use it much, only on the desktop/server. It initially couldn't find my older Netgear NAS but that was fixed with the first update and no issues since. For good order's sake I should say that I'm so boring that no one spies on me, or if they do my data goes straight into the "other" folder.

I'm OK using 10, but I can't get my PC Games on Disc's to load and Run on 10. They ran fine on Windows 7 & 8?

There are a few articles on this, but you can go into the settings and shut all the tracking off. Its not stealing data, but it does look. Then again, so does every antivirus software, etc.

If you're like most people you're probably giving more data away by using apps on your smartphone than you'd ever come close to by using W10.

In your situation, it may be a good thing if your machine can handle it.
How old is your machine?

Overall, it's simple, smooth and will eliminate all the crap that was not working.
If you saw my rant, it's not a super smooth upgrade, you may honestly just want to buy a new machine with it already installed....

Overall, a decent operating system.
The start menu is back, thank god.
Finding everything is a bit different, but not so bad that you won't be able to deal with it.

I use it for surfing and word document editing...it's fine.

Entperprise clients will stick with windows 7 for at least another three years, so my work laptop reflects that reality.

For home use, basic stuff, you may find it easier to use.

Got tired of the notifications so just updated to 10.

But before I did I installed Classic Shell which essentially emulates the Windows 8 interface without all the touch screen software that was constantly taking me somewhere else other than where I wanted to go. With the new software (Windows 10 and Classic Shell) my system is working much better than before I upgraded.

There are still a couple of windows you have to get used to, but nothing difficult.
