Subaru 6 cylinder or
SRT4 Dodge engine ?
mgp4591
When it comes to a Porsche, I'd think that a flat 6 would have locked in the cool factor. I'm biased tho as I have an EG33....
Then again, and innovative build always gets peoples interest up- if you pull it off successfully I think you'll find lots of oohhs and aahhs over it! Good luck which ever you choose.

Oh im for sure doing the eg33.
Was just kinda tossing the idea out there

Nobody ever really took the Neon serious as a performance vehicle except for a very small crowd that convinced themselves that it was a cool car.

To say my motor came from a Neon or PT Cruiser would be like saying my motor came from a Ford Escort or Chevy Citation.

Sure the motor might have potential, but the original package it came from kills any real enthusiasm for it since it is not that special for a 914 swap.

Now the Subaru motor seems more fitting since it is closer in spirit to the original /4 or /6.

As a motor for making total power the SRT4 2.4L turbo engine is a hell of an engine.. You can easily overpower the 914 chassis with it.

The problem with most big power 914's is the transmission. If the transmission is clunky like the 901 or cant handle the power reliably or the gear is wrong the car just feels wrong.

This is where the Subaru H6 is advantageous, its transaxle is a perfect starting point here and with the 250hp of the 6 its a perfect blend of power for most 914 enthusiasts.

If I wasnt stuck on a Audi/VW engine for my car I would have probably gone with a subaru 6 and turbocharged it at some point.

happy11.gif That sounds like a very familiar plan

Plus going with the Subaru engine whether a 4 or 6 cylinder, you've got a flat engine which keeps the center of gravity lower and doesn't compromise the handling advantage these cars have from the factory design. Not disparaging the other choices you'll see on the site at all - we've got some amazing builds with different engines that embarrass more than their share of factory hotrods...

Pt loser for sure. Imagine the shame when your 914 gets SMOKED by the HO GT version while it's hauling 3 good sized grandpa types. Then you don't look at them at the next stop light. Good thing, they're laughing at you. Oh, the shame of it all. Might be a good idea to see what tuners can get out of those 2.5 engines with a handful of mods that don't require a second mortgage.

285 turbo hp out of 2.4L production engine that is as reliable as a hammer.
Performance that a 914 could use as a starting point,like the 951s.
As a package,it would fit nicely transverse with it's 5 or 6 spd.
Some rearranging of the suspension may be needed,to make room.

There is an actual aftermarket for these homegrown turbo engines.

Like the salesman asked,"How fast do you want to go?"

(I like your heads).

And if you could install one of the slick shifting Getrag 5 speed trans in your 914 along with the HO flavor the 914 could run with the semi-big dogs without dropping a years college tuition. Yes, I'm a bit biased and one of those grandpa types in that white pt cruiser that the ricer boys wish they could run down. Blowing by a 914 with a 3.6 at 110 is great fun. Then you put it in 5th and let the 914 catch up.

I looked into this with my Maxima. The inner susp mounts get in the way, plus the trunk, and will likely lose the targa top storage. It's too bad because a modern 6 speed with lsd would have been nice.

When i originally toyed with this idea i measured it and it looked like just way too much cutting for my liking. . .
