well...how to begin. day 3 of trials and tribulations.

engine was dropped out of the car to do a few upgrades; 38 mm oil pump, weltmeister pressure relief pistons, mallory distributo...and a few others.
DAY 1
Lost my CV tool, being carless, joe sharp and brando came to the rescue. within a half hour, we had the engine out.....cut of a siezed mount bolt with the sawzall sad.gif ....brando and I began dissasembly and cleaned the filthy motor up. smilie_pokal.gif

Day 2
Began the day with the intentions of swapping oil pumps and relief pistons.
oil pump install: found out that the drive tang needed to be ground down- no sweat.
went on to replace oil relief valves.... big one swapped fine. Little one was stuck in its bore. sad.gif Steve stromberg suggested i use the pressure from the oil pump to blow the stuck piston out... no go. oil just dribbled around it sad.gif . got it out with my super strength 50 buck neodmyum magnets......finally

Earlier that day Mxmark came over and helped me setup the mallory distributor. smilie_pokal.gif

Day 3
began the day with the intentions of buttoning up the whole motor and getting it in the car.
PO did a horible helicoil job on the intake studs on the heads. of course...they failed. so i had to re- helicoil 2 intake studs. unsure.gif
MattR spent all day over here giving me a hand smilie_pokal.gif we painted all the engine tin, and we asembled the whole thing and got it in tthe car. damn, does it look sexy.

i will crank it over tomorrow...i go to sleep now.....

Thanks to :
Steve Stromberg - excellent tech advice smilie_pokal.gif
Brando - bringing a CV tool and being a helping hand for half a day
Joe Sharp - also bringing a CV tool and just being a good guy
MattR - tireless helper who works for mexican food smile.gif spent 8 hours out here today. great guy, thanks matt.
MxMark - settin up my ignition! you rock man!
Brando
I know it's a far-fetched inquiry, but you won't happen to have the engine in and running by 6AM to make it to the festival of speed AX by 7 for tech inspection, will you? biggrin.gif

The tin looks sexy (good job brando!) and the front cover is nice now with the aluminum paint. We spent a bunch of time today making everything right, and getting ALL the tin in the engine... But its all looking great now and its almost ready. Im glad we got as far as we did. Certain members of the cox household didnt think we'd be able to bolt the engine in :B, but Im pretty sure if we had about 2 more hours we could have started it. Too bad I cant be there sad.gif But, like always, I learn so much when working on other people's 914s.

Great job Aaron......

The ridculously bitchin timing light is at Scotts for your use....

Let us know how the 38mm pump works...

By the way... Did the pump oil ports line up with the block oil ports? I an very interested in that.... If it works for you.. I am going to get one from Steve Stromberg for my stroker motor.. The PO put in a Melling. And I am not a big fan of Melling pumps..........

Melling = Expansion issues...........

Take care brother....

You Cali guys just post this kind of stuff to piss off us Midwesterner's don't you......."I had 7 people over my house to day to help me put my 'rust free' 914 together. I didn't have an engine, but a guy down the street had three of them and just gave me one....for free!" flipa.gif

I'm sooooo happy for you...........really! dry.gif

Tell me about it! You guys in Cali get all the brakes. You have loads of people close by that know how to work on cars, that DON'T MIND HELPING OUT! You can go to the 'rust-free 914 store' at the corner and plunk down $500 for a new one. And what gets me the most, is you can drive them all year round!

Sounds like a prefect use of a couple of days. Wish I had friends like that!

PS: We can drive a 76' 2.0 to the BMV, plunk down $40 and walk away with a no-hastle registration and fresh set of license plates though. flipa.gif

You were just getting started at 10:30? My god boy, the day is half over. I have been out in the garage working since about 6 this morning. Welded up the holes in all the panels and the holes for the sail panel trim. No more side marker lights for me. I got all the holes welded up and ground them smooth and now I am going through looking for the little dings to hammer them out and then a little bondo coverage and then sand. I really want this as close to done by the 2nd as I can. With any luck, I will have it all in primer by then. Sleeping in is for kids.

I would but I have enough to do here for awhile. At 2 I am going to Joes to do his brakes on the V8 car. I have the tools he needs. So if everyone is working on their cars today, then everyone should be up and driving in a week or so and we can all meet at SuperMex for dinner with the cars. Next Friday???

I feel kind of odd... am I the only one who drives their 914 daily, regularly ... and it doesn't need massive maintainance every weekend? lol2.gif

Just kidding... I'm down for supermex. Just got my tunacan installed, need to re-locate the battery (maybe today?) and my preparation for track events is COMPLETE.

You didn't thank me for putting up with you.
