My son Taylor smacked his car in the front end. I got the front repaired, and decided to strip the paint to make proper repairs to the car. I knew there were some issues, but there was more bondo than I thought would be there. Well, time to get it done right. The old paint blistered. Needed to strip it all down, Glad I did.

Never never never put a spoiler on the rear deck lid with screws and wood! I didn't even bother to blast it, but there was plenty of other rust there.

Hey Mark,

There's an old school car guy trick for that hidden issue - a magnet with a thin soft cloth to protect the paint finish & a deft touch to feel when the magnetism lessens at the bondo spots!

Run it all over the car body & pretty much every hidden bondo spot will reveal itself, & the extent of loss of magnetism will give you an idea of how thick it is! If the magnet completely lets go .... well you can guess!

From someone who grew up in the days of blue suede used car salesmen in mostly unregulated used car lots, but with a Dad & Uncles & Grand-Dads who were pretty smart car guys!

Well now you have a clean bare metal fresh start to clean it all up!

I knew this one had some issues, but the price was right. Basically did some trading for it. After Taylor wrecked the front end I decided to fix it right. Planned to do more of a father son thing but he needed another car for his daily driver.
He and Blake (who now works for me at 914Rubber), did the initial work to get the car on the road. But it needs lots of love.

Dumb question: What are the black stripes on the front fenders that survived the hot PNW strippers ?

My brother sand blasted a 356 in our yard in 1975.
I'm sure that wherever that car is today sand is still falling out of the car every time its doors are opened or closed. And its glass is still frosted.

The black stripes are tape where I masked off because the work was just done. No need to do over again. It's "dustless" blasting. Mostly dustless. The medium is a glass bead in water. No heat at all. It makes a mess, and I will be doing some clean up on it this next week. Just needed it to dry out some.

I hope you are making your son do the work.....best thing you can do is have him fix it....

Nope, It's mine now. He had no money and no time, so I got him a Passat for a daily driver. Figured I should fix it right.

It may be dustless but it sure makes a mess. I watched Scotty using his once. He told me there is an additive that keeps the surface rust from forming.
Nothing like starting with clean panels.
