I have had strange noises in the past as well. They ended up being:
1. CV joint. I replaced both on one side.
2. Rear wheel bearing. I replaced the noisy side and have a rebuilt control arm ready for the other side.
3. the craziest of all was the alternator. Take the belt off of it and see if the noise goes away. The car will run on the battery if you need to drive it around. However, once I got the belt loose, I grabbed the pulley and it rattled and the shaft moved in and out.... In and out is not the direction that shaft should move. Pulled the alt (tuff job) and gave it to my rebuilder to repair. All noises are now gone.

good luck
