Full Version: AC idler pulley - is this a problem?

Hi all,

Last year I replaced the old York AC compressor with a sanden style unit. System works great.

In removing engine recently I notice that the belt does not actually rest against the idler pulley. It is just above the pulley. I think this is because the compressor sits a bit higher than the York and also has a slightly smaller compressor pulley. Thus, belt goes from pulley at fan to pulley on compressor, idler really does nothing.

Here is photo of how belt routes originally with the York. My only concern with the idler not doing anything now is if this could cause premature wear elsewhere?? Does it matter?

As long as your belt on the compressor is tight there will be no problems

The idler is solely for belt tension.

As long as the belt is not too tight it's good.
