Please try using the the Internet to figure out a price. This is not a place for eBay style over pricing. This is an online forum where people get parts they need for their hobby for fair prices. Thank you for your attention.

idea.gif .... isn't this site using the internet & the group most familiar with their questions, & thereby avoid overpricing!? confused24.gif

I hope you don't plan to snap when I ask such questions for excess parts I have & will need to offload at some point!

Maybe just give members a break when they ask for pricing advice, as it's different than the rule to list a price in the classifieds section.

Cheers! beerchug.gif

I thought this was a forum to ask all things relating to 914’s. I am not personally interested at this time in Subaru conversions so I skip over those topics without any problem.

I would think if you aren’t interested in pricing topic/questions that you could do the same without any problem.

I like those post (yes, I've posted one and very recently). I read them to get a good starting point to offer a part at a reasonable price. That avoids the over pricing. And yes. That is using the internet! The garage is for anything 914 related. Parts are definitely 914 related.
rmdinmd
You would think you could check on prices here by looking at the FS ads. but in many, if not most cases, the asking prices have been deleted after it has sold. sad.gif So I see nothing wrong with "price check" threads; they are just trying to get feed back on what a "fair" price might be and avoiding the EBAY bidding wars.
GregAmy
Um, this is the Internet.

Ditto. Work on getting people to stop effectively deleting their for sale ads - and even better, get them to post final actual sales prices and stop making it a big secret - and we can build a database from which to use for reference.

Absent that....ask away!
Gunn1
Pretty simple .....there are three price possibilities on an item. Wholesale, Retail and "your price". Your price is some where in between wholesale and retail, depending on how quick you want to sell.

914 parts have continued to go up in price over the years, so what may have been considered a high price not even five years ago may now be consider a bargain.

I am going to assume "mtndawg" is looking to buy parts and would prefer that a seller guess at the price and way under price it so he can snatch it up. Is that about right mtndawg? The market place will dictate the selling price, people asking for a price check just don't know a starting price to list, pretty simple.
toolguy
A good reference for pricing is to use EBay and look at the item in question using the 'advanced' format and choose 'sold items only'. . . .
As a matter of practice that is what I do when selling, but generally offer the items on this site before I stick them on Ebay . . .
My experience is we all are looking for smoking hot deals, and not necessarily what a seller [or EBay history ] indicates is competitive pricing.

I also get what the OP is saying, but at the same time I think it's a legitimate question.
Both the seller and buyer should be able to ask if something is a proper price range.
I've also run into a lot of searches where the seller has deleted the asking price.
As well I've seen buyers (often flippers) trying to scoop items for peanuts before a seller really knows an items value.

-I do want to know the going price range for poor, fair, good, very good and NIB parts.
-I do want a fair price, not only for myself but also for the seller.
-Personally I want to get a high enough price that it's not worth it for a "flipper".
- I do often give stuff away pay it forward
-I do not need or want ebay prices, if I did I'd sell on ebay, I don't.

I'm going through this right now with my 14 year olds 914 Recaro seat, turns out it's worth a few bucks. At the same time it's not going to get top dollar as the vinyl needs to be reupholstered. I see price for VGC seat but not one that needs work.
Not going to be looking for a killing on it, but every penny is for his own 914 project.

Or do you want to see a 14 year old (or any novice) get ripped off?

On an end note I do often give stuff away, pay it forward, or give steal deals, especially to the younger local crowd and friends. I've found that this practice has often paid off for me in spades.
The screaming deal swl just gave my son is proof of that.

Using the search feature in classified specific and any date will give a seller an idea of past and current prices. The more expensive these days is not always the case. I don't understand the editing of ad titles to "sold" and erasing the text but it's the sellers ad and they can do as they please. What's eBay?

Yes, but are they realistic, some do not understand the concept of haggling.
Also many peeps do not understand how to do a boolean search.

Btw Mark. A number of AM seats have been offered lately for pretty good money and in need of a complete reupholstering. Have the son take a look and he can enter the wonderful world of negotiating, boxing, getting shipping quotes to a almost complete address and standing in line to ship the part.

Boy, I asked a similar question about 5 months ago on a rare part. Needless to say, there's a few members that wanted to bend me over for asking such a question. idea.gif

Yep fun...lucky he doesn't have to stand in line for post office (rural), but bigger items like this seat rolleyes.gif
He'll learn shades.gif

Most of my 'pay it forward' is stuff I don't want to ship biggrin.gif

Wardrobe box from uhaul or the like and cut down if needed. But they're not free. Then HE can buy the roll of bubble wrap at the same time. Costs money to make money.

I posted a price check in the classifieds last night for a rare item that I couldn't get a price for on eBay or elsewhere. What's the harm in asking when you've hit a wall?

I'm usually interested in reading the pricing comments from members here. I think they've been valuable in guiding people to realistic assessments and have been helpful to me in expanding my knowledge of the 'market'. That's particularly important with the dramatic changes we're seeing.

I've also seen instances where a poster discovers his part is rarer and more valuable than he thought and other times when a part he thought was a big deal turns out to be pretty common.

To make a short story long, I think these types of threads add to the collective knowledge.....although I do miss Cap'n Krusty's admonishments that "it's worth what someone will pay."

I've recently been selling more than buying. That being said I'm always willing to pay a healthy price for good quality stuff. I'm also a big fan of the great vendors on this site like tangerine racing, 914rubber.

(I'm with O.P. on this)

old rule of thumb: a used part is worth about 30% of new price, a NIB part in my shed is "maybe" worth 50% to a guy who needed it yesterday and has cash

the main reason we hobby guys here are selling 914 parts and cars is cuz we don't need or want 'em anymore - not cuz we are in biz for a profit - often we are just tired of the hobby, the storage hassle/cost or the "wife wants it gone"

advice from the late Bruce Anderson:

"put it on ebay, with triple reserve of what you will take for it"

start at 0.99 - the high bids will tell you what it is worth at that point in time, for the few who might be looking for it at that point in time

now you know "what's it worth?" - people with cash to spend just told you

you can always lower the reserve or offer the high bidder a "second chance offer" if you really want it gone

- nice thing about ebay is the buyer does not need cash - just has to have enuf credit to click the button

AND this, - from another experienced Porsche stuff ebay seller I met a few yrs back: "the serious cash buyers will come in via private messages after the reserve auction ends "reserve not met""

yes - ebay costs money to list - it's simply an "international classifieds" - it touches 'way more people actually looking to buy a given item at a given point in time than does a 914 classified or Craigslist post; just a cost of doing biz

- some us just won't pay an advert fee (listing fee) to ebay for the privilege of setting a price point, so we rely on these forums instead;

so, we get opinions on what it's worth from someone who does not need or want it, some who would've bought last week if the dog hadn't eaten the cash stash, others who "will buy when>>>>" whatever they have sells first, several who also have one & hope it is worth more than yours, or from someone who maybe[i] actually sold the same item

- to wit: deleted sale price adverts - ??may we can suspect the price gotten was not the price asked ???

this is reminiscent of a real estate market axiom: a seller will ALWAYS tell you "I got my price" - but that is not always the "original ask" - and very very rarely will any seller tell you the actual cash rec'd

- Craigslist is free, but we all know it is fraught with CSOBs, scammers and dilettantes - and it is a CASH ONLY market, no free shipping

.

Rand
It sure is cool having a place where thousands of friends interested in the same thing are available to talk with in one place. No way in hell would I figure searching the web for 914 advice makes more sense than coming here.
6freak
for most selling 914 "shit" Its about the profit and not about the cars and or helping friends ,Ive given alot of hi dollar parts to people that needed them, and recieved a few to with not a penny exchanged thats what its supposed to be! ... NOT... I have a NOS set of tail lenses and i want $1250.00 GTFOH or a six motor mount for big money or a windshield washer bottle for $500 bucks its stuff like that and people like that I have no time for

People working in parking lots on a buddys cars in local shops(labor) and trading stuff and giving them whatever they need to make the car go is what its about! not money
