Thinking WCR and leaving the car in the parking lot. Anyone have a smart alternative for an alarm?
rmdinmd
Depends on what it is you want to accomplish. biggrin.gif Basically, I don't leave any thing of real value in car and I have one of the battery connectors that has a quick disconnect that I can remove and in essence disconnects the battery. I can lock the car but a determined thief can always get in mad.gif

pull the wire from the coil. You can't stop someone that REALLY wants to take your car while it is unattended, but you can slow them down during the process.
Rand
Or take the rotor out of the distributor. Can't reconnect what isn't there.

At an event like WCR where so many fellow enthusiasts are everywhere all the time.... Don't sweat it.

Add a factory switch, like one for a rear window heater, and wire it into the leads from the ignition to the coil or fuel pump. . Looks stock and will not be able to start unless turned on. engine will crank but no fire. .

Just keep the top off and a bowl of water/food, good to go!

;-) I dont have an alarm for my car (yet) but I did strategically leave the fuse for my fuel pump and starter relay in very accessible locations to discourage any unauthorized starting.

I take my wheel with me if I am somewhere shady.

Agree that an Alarm will not stop a determined thief. Maybe one of these to help find it after it is gone. They alert you if any movement and provide GPS type tracking.

I keep my car looking like a POS so they steal yours first. See you at WCR! piratenanner.gif

This one runs through an app on your phone, door opens or it moves, you get notified and can track in real time. You can ping it, arm/disarm it and track history or in real time through google maps, all through your phone tablet or computer.

It's pretty trick, I have some buddies that use it on their trailers as well.
Rand
Bellis for the win. The real trick is the thief won't even know what engine he is steeling. Befuddle is the best defense. =>)

+1 hahaha

Just pull the FP fuse or relay if you're worried about someone stealing the car. Park close to your room.

Another easy trick is to pull the switched 12v cable from the starter motor.

Get a $100 Iphone 4, wire the charger to the car, and toss it in the front trunk. Add it to your service for an extra $10 a month, and if the car goes missing, use Find My Phone service.

After Wayne's car went missing, I guess we need to be working on something like this.

Not to rag on Mats, but I'd rather pull the fuel pump relay or coil wire. It's too easy to pop start a car without working starter.

don't you guys watch TV, parking enforcement can backup lift your car and be gone in a minute....

How about this ?

this is the best;

None of that works.

So some device makes you aware of a group of armed gangbangers stealing your ride and you do what? Call the cops? To late - He gone.. Confront them with your 12 Gauge Citori? You're headed to court for years and lose your home and 914 to the underprivileged degenerate loser's attorney's fees / The State pays their defense fund as they are not financially able.... poke.gif

The thieves that recently stole three 993's in Laguna (and my street legal lifted golf cart) all in a month or two - used a flat bed tow truck and blobs of grease on the tire path up to the bed. Given a tow hook, a locked car, locked steering, set parking brake and gears engaged does not matter one whit.......She Gone!

My recommendation is to carry stated value insurance and maintain good current photo documentation to defend the value stated. Haggerty recently called to up my stated value by 15K as they are aware of the values escalating on 914's /

I park in the most remote locations when necessary, responsibly lock the car and sleep like a baby.........

It will make some noise but probably less that 30 seconds to cut that off with an 18v grinder.

A simple car cover could be all that's needed; it prevents observation of the car and its condition. Unless someone has been scoping out beforehand what is under the cover is unknown. My $.02; and carry full agreed upon value per Forrest

Jim's got the idea... biggrin.gif Maybe Gerald's mom could sew some up for us?

IMO, not very useful.
It isn't a GPS tracker.
All those locater "tile" devices use bluetooth which means that the only way to locate the tag is if some other user that has the app on their mobile device is in within range of the tile (which is just a few feet) and their mobile device has network connectivity.
So the odds are against you for ever locating the tile.

A real GPS tracker is the way to go.
That way you can tell if what is being tracked is moving and where it is.
There are many of these types of devices.
Here is an example of one:
