I would like to move my car around without the engine/tranny/axles etc. Is it possible to insert ONLY the stub axle, tighten the nut and NOT damage the bearings? I assume it's safe but I don't want to find out the hard way!

Yup, just torque the stub properly and you could roll it cross country.

Wasnt that you and a few others that had this discussion last week? Do not roll the car around without at least the stub axles installed. You rolling it over here? I got a trailer if you need it. Let me know.
