World,

I am assembling a set of fresh early bumpers to back-date my 75'. smash.gif

I am installing a set of new 914rubber bumper tops, and am curious what this center stud if used for on the rear bumper rubber?

IPB Image

Am I missing a part?

I don't see what uses this, as it does not come in contact with the steel bumper at all.

Thanks folks,

Matt

Welcome to my world. On 70-74 914's, there is a bracket from the body that mounts to that stud. It prevents the rubber from sagging in the middle. I need to weld one on to my car.
matthepcat
Really? Funny, I guess I have had two 75's and a 74 that I never removed the rear bumper.

Thanks!

Ya' know I bet you can take a piece of steel or aluminum and have it bridge the license plate "gap" and be secured by the two studs to the left and right. Im going to give that a try.

you do need it, the rubber sags without it.

How many times I've walked past the back of my car and torn my overalls on that thing, I actually put tap around it.

That's a nice looking part.... aktion035.gif

I second that. torn pants or torn skin. shades.gif

Kinda like leaving the tow ball in the receiver of your truck. I rarely knock my shin, but someone always does.

I cut a small piece of sponge with a slit in it and slide it over while I'm working on the rest of the car after catching my leg and inventing some new words.

About how far out does that tab stick out from the body work? I can probably fab my own from aluminum and bolt/rivet it to the body.
Mikey914
Yes can easily be fabricated. I'm running mine without but need to get one on.

Curious how you mounted the license plate lights since the holes don't line up?
matthepcat
The "holes" are just dimples. Small self tapping screws do the job.

We sent one to Ken.
There's another in my metal tidbit box. Which car needs one ?
Steve
Lots of guys backdating bumpers. We could all use one. Interesting that its curved up. I used an L bracket riv nutted to the body, but it still bends and doesn't work right. I need to weld something directly to the body like the original.
colingreene
Mine was riveted.
