Full Version: Do people here rally?

A friend and I took my 356 out in a rainy mountain rally on Saturday. We finished safely and had a blast, but a mechanical delayed us by 50 minutes and killed any chances of a respectable placing. It was a Monte Carlo Style rally hosted by ITN, who does an excellent job on reasonably-priced, well-planned, and well-staffed events.

That got me wondering: does anyone here take their 914 on rallying?

Photo of the 356, snapped during pee-break, on old Route 66 NE of Ontario under ominous clouds before the ominous mountains that we were soon to know in rainy detail.

I would love to do the California Mille, Copperstate 1000 or Colorado Grand. Maybe one day they might accept a 914-4!

Those are really expensive, but would be a ton of fun. Local Monte Carlo Style (as well as time-speed-distance) rallies are much less expensive. ITN charged just $25 per car for Saturday's rally, which went through 11 in-markers over 5 hours with great support. There were even trophies for winners in each class. Unfortunately, we sucked. No trophy here.

All cars were welcome and, besides a super-quick, red '87 528 BMW that had been tuned, all cars were modern. I've been doing these for years and have never seen a 914 participate. When mine is back on the road, I plan to use it. I was just wondering whether anyone out there is already doing these and, if so, where?

This subject just came up last week with a young co-worker. He was curious what I did with our classic toys and inquired about rallying.

My response to him that as a kid in the '70s around my area they were popular events, thought they would be entertaining to do once I was driving and had a fun car, but these days I seldom hear of them.

Is it my location, changing interests in the car world, or both? Don't know, but I'd like to participate - would rather drive something like a rally than stroll around a Cars & Coffee each weekend.

We try to rally here, but it always degrades into party.

We would do more if they had them setup around here.
We (wife and I) won a gimmic rally a few years ago.
It was the only time she liked a car event and said we should do it again.

She no longer comes to shows or anything else with me.

Sad, we do not have more than one rally nearby....land we won't get into a TSD level thing, it needs to be more casual.

In PDX the Cascade Sports Car Club puts one on every Friday night.
Starts at 6pm in Milwaukie. I hope to attend a few this summer.

I have been wanting to do one foe these for awhile! Rally's and hill climbs seems to be all over Europe and not much over here. screwy.gif

East cost seems to have some, not much out here on the west coast...

Thanks for all of your responses. I know there's a time-speed-distance rally going to happen in a week or two outside of Los Angeles, but I'm not a huge fan of time-speed-distance events. When the next Monte Carlo rally will happen here in SoCal, I'll post and see if any 914s can show up.

I can't wait to try one in my 914 -- it handles so well -- but it's still mostly in pieces. Such is the way of the 914?
