Hello all ---- I have a bad idea that would require an output shaft out the back of a 914 ----- anybody have any ideas ????
4x4 trans mission would achieve same thing but adapting it to the 914 motor may be huge issues ----
Just interested
think Schwimmer 914

I doubt you could configure a 914 transmission for that, but engine adapters for using a Subaru engine with the 914 transmission could also work to use the Subaru transmission behind a T4 engine, which should get you to where you want. When we use Subaru transmissions they're converted to two wheel drive, but for what you want to do the rear output shaft could be retained. With that transmission you can't choose to use only the rear drive, meaning all four "wheels" would be driven so you'd need to add another external clutch to disengage the rear drive. Other than that all the parts already exist, so should be viable.

I can think of 2 options, 1 would have engine speed at all times when the clutch is transferring power to the input shaft., the other would have whatever RPM 1st gear is at and would run only when 1st is engaged.
I wouldn't expect it to transfer that much power before breaking something.

The Subaru engine with the automatic 4 or 5EAT AWD trans has an electric coupler that you can devise a switch for to engage the rear drive for your propeller... isolating it to prevent it shorting out may be a problem. Or you could use the manual trans from an earlier Subaru Loyale that has a transfer case-type shifter to engage the rear drive. Just use the engine that came with it instead of a later model EJ22 or EJ25. Schwimmer eh?

Vw van synchro transmission, or the Passat synchro and tranny might do what you need.

I like the idea of a subie trans - I searched but did not find anything on a 914 engine and subie trans -
I am not really interested in watercooling the motor - or big HP --- 100 is OK
if you all have seen any info on 914 motor with subie trans - plx let me know -
other way around is pretty common - thanks

I don't think I've ever seen that combination either, since most people's priority is to get rid of that motor first. In theory it should work, but try calling Kennedy, that's their business so they'll be able to give you specific info. Here: http://www.kennedyenginc.com/Pages/default.aspx
Some thought towards the 4 wheel drive 914 has been made in this corner. A variety of Porsche parts from the past,re-positioned and re-applied. A cheaper way to achieve the 959's utility. Housings, shafts and gears.Hub carriers and control arms. And yes,a fan,a part suitable for creating a low pressure under the car,Jim Hall like.
Subie tranny will work, but you will need to flip the diff. Outback gear (not sure if that is the name) will sell you what you need.
Or Vw van synchro. That also has a 2wd/4wd option you could use to make your project work.
Good luck with this one, keep me in mind when you give up and want to sell the project.

Not impossible, tho a few problems with buoyancy, displacement, power, drag and a host of other myriad probs. For sure a unique 914,might even look ok on the open water,a huge roostertail from the jets. I would think along the lines of deployed foils, fly by wire and cfrp panels. A regime of corrosion protection is for sure on the list. A pond crosser of course only needs inflatable floats and a paddle or oars. /
hello don't see why i would need to flip anything ------ the layout is the same as the subie --- engine in the front of the trans
for a bus you need to flip
i learned that 1 cubic meter of sealed box will lift 2200 lbs minus the weight of the box 36 cubic feet +/-
so 9 foot x 3 foot x 2 feet tall box would do it ------------- front trunk and main seating area should be close ----- i will add a fake floor under the whole car 2" below the lowest part and foam filled ---- will be a huge sheet of thin metal that wraps up the sides, front and rear a foot or 18"

Well, starting with a six, you're way ahead of the power curve.

"Tranny spins,the,wrong way."
sooooo question - Does the 914 motor spin an uncommon way or do the subies spin an uncommon way ???? what about a small truck 4x4 transmission -----or will I have the same issue ????
one step forward 2 steps back ---- the flip ring and pinion kit is over $500 on top of the adapter kit $$$$$$$

Tranny spins,the,wrong way.
Don't understand, Rich, the "wrong" way? There are right and left hand pitch propellers, right? So how could it be wrong?
from that thread - Yes the 914 and the subaru rotate the same direction. Just almost imposible to use the subie trans with out insane amounts of fab work. KEP make a kit to bolt almost any motor on a vw/porsh trans. Also the 944/968 used 5/6 speeds that can be used with a minimal amount of fuss, less then any 1/16 of the work as trying to use the subie trans and you'll get better results there some info on the web. Pretty much the honda b,d,f,h family of engines all spin counter clockwise as do covairs. Most all motors spin clockwise. Also any honda v6 or any honda engine in the k family spin clockwise. The honda k24 would be great if it's not to tall close the hood and you would have to use stand alone engine management.
Give these fellas a call, they are certain to have the solution to your problem, they build them after all. Could you put a hitch on your 914-6 and tow a boat or would a gas filled float work for your application? A trolling motor attached temporarily to each door and bumper corner would give good performance with two stroke power.
