Hi,

well, I am not finding a way to install the engine lid by myself.

first.....is it doable by one person?

if so, how do you do it, please?

thanks

I do it all the time.

Loosen both sides.
Remove bolt from side 1. Gently lift and rest lid bracket on top of mount.
Remove bolt from other side and remove lid.
jacksun
tks,

I was able to remove the engine lid..

now I am trying to get it back on

Randal - it's doable by one person. It's not easy, but it's doable. And I don't know how to describe how I did it blink.gif except that it is possible. And I don't think it took me that long to get it, so keep trying (unless a neighbor or family member is available to make themselves useful).

There's a neat trick, if you want to do it. You can cut the front of the oblong holes out on the lid hinges, (length-wise) ... this turns the holes into two-pronged forks, if you will.

Doing this allows the hinge bolts to stay in place. You just loosen the bolts enough to slide the lid out ... and tighten them up after you slide the lid back into place.
Cuda911
1. Put a thick towel on the trunk to support the lid.
2. Set the lid on the towel and slide it forward.
3. Tilt it up and try to get one of the bracket holes aligned.
4. Curse like a sailor whilst trying to get the screw in.
5. The other side is easier after that.

Eventually you will get it. Haven't found a better way. Open to suggestions.

hey,

thanks for the tips.. i kept at it and was able to get it on...

although i still seem to have done something wrong, It, the hinge on

the deck lid, slides UNDER the fixed piece on the firewall? at least that

is the only way i could get it on. it is much lower on one side than

the other as it does not line up with that small side piece at all.

i stopped last nite, to wait overnight for your responses.

i will notch out the bracket like you suggested and try again this

morning.

thank you for your help

Yep, it goes under. That's what makes it tough. Sounds like you have one side under and one over?

Were you cursing enough? That is a very key step.
jacksun
the cursing arrived when it didn't line up correctly.

do not remember it being that way prior to removal a couple summers

ago. trying to not become frustrated and like before, break something.

will let you know the outcome.

I do have help today with putting the hoods back on.

thank again

You cant fix it like that as the threaded fixed nuts are on the bulkhead brackets, if you had the lid hinge above then you couldn't bolt it up.

I'd guess somethings bent or a bracket is starting to come away from the bulkhead

The brackets welded to the firewall are prone to breaking. There's a lot of stress on the right angle. Look closely to see if there's a crack in the corner of the bracket. It doesn't take much of a crack to make the lid sit a lot lower and possibly even contact the trunk lid. Ask me how I know sad.gif. Be careful when testing. If the bracket is cracked at the corner, a quick weld can repair it. Just make sure you bend/close that crack gap before you do. Smoking crack during this process might make it more fun.

This is a task that gets the significant other involved in the 914. Doing the slotting trick as Mark suggested makes it a 60 second job.

Never tried to put engine lid back on by myself; next time I think I'll try it just to see if I can.

I belive there is a mod,..that someone video'd ,..that makes it very easy to pop it on and off... its on youtube,..but I don't think he tells U how it was done,..FM
euro911
Uh, the method was explained in post# 5.

Haven't seen a video on it though
jacksun
i cut the slots as directed, and that helps considerably.

it still was off, sideways and with the new rubber seal for the rear window.

i have an appt in ann arbor at noon, so when i get back i will

put it back in and shoot some images for you to decipher.

tks

randal

also. the hoods went on easily and are looking good alignment wise.

new rubber really looks great, and has a very nice texture.... kind of

reminds me of something..... must be a memory from 40 yrs ago.

I think he might be referring to the quick release hardware. From mcmark I believe
jacksun
thank you for all the suggestions.

the engine lid is now on and looks correct.

cutting out the notch was the way to go.

Tks again

randal

now on to the new vinyl sail panels...

yeah on NotchMark. Unitl i did that little trick, i used a bungee from the carport structure (AKA "Wife"...) but the slotted brackets make it a quick one man job. I am so spoiled as to now taking the lid off for simple tune ups and cleaning with the lungus blow gun / Mark is demonstrating herein... beerchug.gif ....
