In Arizona, you can go for a Bonded Title. It takes a lot of time, work and $s. California probably has something similar.

There are some states where you can get a title with just a Bill of Sale. Do a search on the web for auto titles. There are some companies who will get you a title for a fee.

If the car is in good condition, it is worth the cost. If the car is not too good, then part it out.

Use this as a tool to buy the car at a lower price.

First make sure it is not stolen.

If you feel comfortable then use this place-

International Title Service

They use Maine to get you the paperwork you need to get a title from your state. Maine doens't title vehicles older than 88.

I have used them twice and it has worked fine, took less than 2 weeks per car, about $150 each.

Good luck

All you have to do is get a bill of sale from the owner and go to DMV and apply for title. You will probably have to have the VIN signed off by DMV or a police officer which of course is a PITA if you have to tow the car.

Just make sure you are getting the bill of sale from the owner. Is there an old expired registration form in the car that shows the owner's name? Actually, if you have an old registration form DMV might let you slide on the VIN check.
