Hey folks, My steering wheel has a lot of slop, 1/2" or so, I took off wheel, and can see a ring set up about a 1/2" in....I'm guessing I need to take down the steering column? And order upper bearing from A.A or pelican? Thank...you....

Start with whatever might be the easiest thing to fix. Crawl under and look at the drive shafts just under the dash. There are some universal joint fittings that might be loose. Mine were loose. Tightened them in about 10 minutes. Done. Shine a flashlight under there while you lightly move the steering wheel. Good luck.

Could be steering coupler too.

Could be a Loose rack and pinion.

I.e. the rubber donut that connects the steering shaft to the steering rack. That was my first guess too.

When you say "play", do you mean you can turn the steering wheel that far and nothing happens to the direction the car goes? Or do you mean that the wheel moves up and down that far?
Two different problems, two different sets of solutions.

Ahh, yes big difference up and down...with spline in my hand I can move it up and down or side to side for that matter, a 1/2" or so... Thanks...(seems like it would be a bearing)
Not a thread hijack but I have exactly the same problem.
I guess you need to take out the old bearing and replace it with the 928 bushing, can anyone tell me how much dismantling is required?

I spent a summer and fall with family in NJ. Went through their "Dog Days" and it was like spring in my neck of the woods. But come fall, they all had shorts and flip flops on and I was in a snow mobile suit with three layers under. I flew home to a nice 95*. I can only work after 2:00 am this time of the year.

@DavidSweden I think you only need to temove the horn pad, sterring wheel and the turn signal- wiper switches. You may need to replace the ball bearing in the upper end of the column too depending on how much play you have.
