I'm going to stop in and look at a 75 914 in a couple of weeks and would like any pointers as to what to look for when checking these cars out.

Any suggestions from you folks who own them would be very much appreciated.

Sir Andy nailed it. Try to arrange in advance to either bring a floor jack or have the car somewhere with a lift to look under the car. Make sure you bring some crazy lighting too. You need to see everything in the hard to look into spots. Remember, absent all that, you can stick your smart phone under there or in there and shoot pictures too.

That is the most efficient way to identify all of the rust issues these cars have. They all have it unless they have undergone a full/complete stripping and restoration - and they better have the pictures or it did not happen.

You just to go into this with your eyes wide open and not get blind sided after you guy it with a $10K rust repair.

Take someone near you who already has a 914 with you to look at the car. As mentioned, look for rust. However, if you don't know where to look for rust you may not find it. Take a 914 friend with you.

Hi Jordan,

How about starting with this 914 Condition Assessment Form created by member Jeff Bowlsby at the 1st link below, then peruse the other Tech Docs & the rest of his website to make you a better educated driver.

There is also great info on what's on which MY at p914.org - although you'll have to manually change the links from .com to .org until Steve S. gets them all fixed again (his server suffered a lightning strike a few weeks back).

The major rust areas are:

Hell hole (under the battery tray)
Longitudinal (longs) frame members (especially pass rear near jack plate)
Rear trunk floor (especially where it meets the back panel)
Floor pans
Around the A pillar

But the cancer can and does crop up everywhere. Do a google search with 914world + "rust" + any of the above and you'll learn pretty quickly what to look for.

If you can't find a 914 person to go with you and the car looks good, take pictures of the above areas and post them here. Best of luck!

If your good with welder do what i did, go right to the passenger side long and behind the jack point and push your fingers right through the frame of the car while liberating piles of rust from the metal. The price should start going down dramatically. Seriously try and bring knowledgeable person with you.
