As much as I like 550s, the 914 seems like a good targa.

I just want a neoprene wet suit material that I can snap on and take off without messing with the targa top operation. I am working on my idea, But I would never chop my top. Interesting thread though.

I took these pics in 1984 or 85 at the White Plains , NY swap meet.
It was a nice looking well done conversion from what I recall.

I have seen these in the pass but always wonder how the engine gets air to help cool it if the engine lid is now closed off?

Your post reminded me of an old Amco ad I photocopied a long time ago. The ad showed a tonneau top and other accessories for the Fiat X1/9. A quick search found the ad online with photos, instructions, and comments:

The Amco top required a lot of snaps. If the top you’re planning is for parking use only then fewer snaps (and less drilling) should be needed.

I've thought that a mesh sun fabric using a folding frame like the 911 Targa would be cool.
A lot of work though.

Here's the one I'm working on. I have the engine cover on and the piece that covers behind the seat. I'll try to get it out this weekend to get an updated photo. I've not tried to figure out the soft top yet. Too many other projects.
