Welding Aluminum is not easy. I have seen pros screw it up. Maybe someone else will have better info but you may need to take it to a pro if you have never welded AL before.

Isn't the transmission case a magnesium-aluminum alloy? If so, it's even harder to weld.

Mag is hard to weld and it warps, you can do it with just gas welding, but you need the correct welding rod. Stuff has to be super clean.
You can only weld about a 1/4" at a time in a couple different places on the case, let it fully cool, repeat, until you're done.

Bug drag guys often weld bars (gussets) to the bottom of the case, to keep them from breaking, it can take a couple of weeks to weld them in fully.

Thanks smile.gif I'll try to get it welded in some specialist..

Oh crap if it's Magnesium then even worse for sure.

What would it cost you to replace the entire tranny vs welding?

Mike...are you sure they are cracks, a lot of casting marks look like cracks but are not. Best, Mark

They are magnesium. I weld 911 fans and housings weekly for customer's. I have very expensive mag rod $900 for 4 lbs.. Oxy is a new one to me as mag is flamable. TIG uses inert gas so it can't start on fire with oxygen.
MikaM
I'm quite sure welder.gif

I was going to suggest the same thing.
A new (used) case can be had for a couple $100.
Welders that can weld that START at a couple $100 an hour and there is no guarantee the case wont warp.

Here in Finland a lot, you probably have to ship it somewhere else wink.gif I have few connection's to schools where they teach welding.. I,m counting on these friends smile.gif

I have always wondered: IF you move a core & the diff that goes with the core from one case to another, do you have to reset the pinion depth?

I also have a case you can have. Shipping from Germany to Finnland would cost about Euro 30. If you are interested, I will send pictures.
Keep in mind you will need to readjust the R&P if you change the case. Need to set pinion depth, differential bearing preload and backlash.

What R&P mean? I sent you PM smile.gif
Dave_Darling
R&P == Ring and pinion. Where the pinion gear on the counter-shaft meshes with the big ring gear attached to the differential.

Drill holes at the end of the cracks and keep using it won't go any further , your other options are more expensive, good luck.

R&P stands for Ring and Pinion. The differential gear set needs to be set up for the case it will be installed in.

I was talking to 911 specialist today whit this issue, he said at welding old box is way to go in this case, it's not so bad (he has seen worst). Now I'm waiting the price for this and if the welder guy do it.. it seams to be bit dangerous operation because of Magnesium.. Let's see how this end up eventually popcorn[1].gif
