Im in monrovia and its 89 to 104 deg lately

I like to take the 914 out an about on sundays to
Stretch its legs but should the car be shut down for the summer

Ive heard of cars being shut down for the winter

But during summer ?


Im going 25 miles around town at most

Not huge trips. But without temp ,oil ,druck etc guage

Not sure what is advise able

I'd say enjoy it! Timing set proper, oil level where it should be... Do
It. My 1.7 was a daily driver for 5 years in PA. Our Summer's would hit 90 plus temps
once in awhile. No gauges, just look for the "idiot" light if the pressure drops too much,
Can always pull over for a cool down. My .02 :-)

I drove my car yesterday. It was about 104 degrees out from the Palm Springs area. Mine is pretty much stock and I run it without the rain tray in.

2.5 hour drive back home. Biggest thing I'd say is getting your human body hydrated.

The car was fine. If the timing and fuel mixture is right..... should be no problem. I moved my fuel pump to fire wall just underneath and behind the passenger seat....below the engine compartment and have never had vapor lock.

I think next year though I'm going to add a oil cooler once the bigger motor goes in.

Get a head temp gauge and take the mystery out of it! It's simple to install and much cheaper than running in the dark. Under $100 for peace of mind (or the red flag that it's off)? Priceless.

My 73 2L was my DD in SoCal for a decade 75-85 & 127,000+/- miles without the center console OT in to monitor - including out to "The River" to water ski in the summer (100-120), & once I had the fuel pump relocated to up front behind the steering rack cover (per the Porsche Tech/Service Bulletin) in 76, I never had a problem with vapor lock.

I got it 12/75 at about 45k & went to about 172K miles, then I stored it in 6/85 due to a non-fault accident when parked after a 80-83 full rolling resto/rebuild.

I did follow the factory reccos for all services & oil/filter, etc. done by my factory trained 914 specialist independent, so it was always running right.

agree.gif The suggestions above work well; my experience from driving a 914 in hot So Cal weather is that your fringe speed makes a big difference. If it's 100 outside and your driving at 80 + mph, oil temps are gonna move up pretty fast; cutting back to 65 mph drops the oil temp way down. Not many want to go 65 anymore, but it's worth a try

Here's the deal: if the motor is functioning per factory specs - and this applies to any car - then the ambient temperature doesn't make a lot of differences. Cars nowadays run between 180-220 degrees, so a ten or 20 degree bump in ambient temp isn't really going to affect that.

Make sure it's in proper tune and drive away.

I lived in Riverside for 11 years. Now in Las Vegas. My 914 was my daily driver for most of that time. I would only drive to and from work about 3 miles.

Any distance while the temperature is over 95° will chance for vapor locking and overheating of the oil.

Now that i'm in Vegas, It gets parked for the summer. I can not even drive it to work, which is 7 miles, without the gas and oil near boiling. blink.gif

Most people park their cars for the winter to avoid the damage that winter does. Us desert rats park ours durring the summer to avoid the damage that summer does.

Add an aux. cooler, use synthetic oil and drive it like you stole it. Either that or disconnect the oil temp gauge and fogetaboudit. av-943.gif

I drove a 1.7 for 25 years and over 350,000 miles in Oklahoma temps in excess of 105°. Some summers were over 110. Never had any heat related problems except vapor lock till i moved the pump to the front trunk. 1.7's just don't have the heat related problems of the 2.0

The 914 was my daily for a few years, in Vegas, in 110F+, so.... confused24.gif

None of them fancy gauges either, I was a poor college kid then.

Did I mention it had a black interior? Yep, earned my man idiot card with my first car.

It gets too hot for me inside the car, just end up sweaty everywhere I go. Best time to drive in SoCal is top off in fall, winter, and spring... biggrin.gif Not to rub it in haha
