Hi, I am new to the website. My teenagers and I are going to get our 1972 914 painted and I am trying to understand the color "Guards Red". I was told by our body guy that there could be variations of the color. So I called the Porsche dealership here in town and they told me to use the code LM3A and possibly L80K. Can anyone confirm that these are the right codes for Guards Red? Thank you very much and it's good to find you all.

Don't think Guards Red was ever a factory color on a 914... but having said that, my car was painted Guard's Red a long time ago by a previous owner. He said it was the factory Porsche color L80K, also known as India Red (or Indischrot in German). I love the color on my 914!

Here it is (or course, on a flat bed tow truck...!)

to complicate it for you...

There are two guards reds

pre 1996 code # 72060

and

1996 + code # 75442

so if you park your old guards red car next to a new one they will be slightly different....

Lots of debate on this in the 911 world. However, for the most part it is agreed that codes L80k and 027 are most commonly used by the different paint brands. L80k matched my car perfectly for some minor touch ups (valances, head light rings).

Here are all the codes:

72060 027 guards red porsche 1973 - 2003

72060 27 guards red porsche 1973 - 2003

72060 G1 guards red porsche 1973 - 2003

72060 G8 guards red porsche 1973 - 2003

72060 L027 guards red porsche 1973 - 2003

72060 L80K guards red porsche 1973 - 2003

72060 LM3A guards red porsche 1973 - 2003

75442 G1 indischrot porsche 1995 - 2006

75442 L84A indischrot porsche 1995 - 2006

Wow, you guys are awesome! I am leaning towards the Guards Red that does not have an orange hint to it. So it sounds like the Guards Red (Indischrot) 98 is where I need to be... or the L80K... But probably more so the L80K. Do you all agree?

My GT clone will be re-done in Guards Red. It's been painted that color since the mid 80's so it's pretty fixed in my mind. I also like the ones that are more red than orange.

my 911 looks way more orange in the pic than it is in real life. Here is next to our '13 boxster.

I think 98 was generic for custom color and not specific to Guards Red.

My L80K car hasn't a hint of orange. It's straight-up red.
