Full Version: When Engine Building Goes Bad

I am working along building the 2056. I have 3 of the piston and cylinders in place. I am putting the last piston pin spiral lock in place and then!!!!! The damm lock goes flying into the CASE. Here we go again, tearing the engine down AGAIN. Got the case pulled in half. Sure enough it was laying there.

I started over again on the 1st piston and drop it on the rubber mat. It bounced and broke a tab off the skirt of the KB piston. Why me?

It cost $63.83 for dropping the piston. Now I will have to add another week to the build schedule. headbang.gif

Patience. You'll get there.

Not as bad as having the spirlelock come off after the engine is built!!!

Yes, lucky me!

By the way, who like spirallocks vs circlips?

It happens to all of us Mark! It is hard as hell to walk away when I have my agenda and shit happens. I'm guessing this is not your primary transportation. It will still be there tomorrow and it will come out better than if you were able to do it today. I haven't had the energy to post what I found and have to fix in my 3.0. I will start or add to my thread at some point.

I stuff lint free towels into the cylinder spigots and other access ports into the engine when installing these locks. If you lose one, it falls onto the towel and you retrieve it.

Nice simple idea Jake! Dang it's late over there. Get some sleep.

Make sure you 'do not' drop the wrench. blink.gif
Strings,like for children's mittens,so you 'do not',drop the wrench.
Pita, getting older, the onset of debilitating decrepitude.
You should get that looked at,the inadvertent loss of muscle memory. laugh.gif
There is a series of tests, that measures the incidence of such events.
A similar effect can be seen in hyperbaric chamber experiments, and the loss of motor control, asphyxia.
Even at peak physical fitness, the Mercury astronauts too, displayed the symptoms.
I mention this because of a similar incident in the die-shop,where the guy installed the slide cams reversed.
A 200K kaboom,for a moment's lapse in concentration,and a delivery date that was delayed.
A brain fart, and one that can be helped to avoid. idea.gif
May your build go smoothly, and error free. biggrin.gif

BTW,it's not just you, everyone building engines has pulled a bonehead move at some point on the learning curve.

Going to get some lint free towels this time as Jake suggested.

No time for Jake to sleep! He needs to finish that Testarossa engine because my 914 is on its way to him tomorrow!!!

My lessons come in the tens-of-thousands...you'll be ok! Patience is an unmatched virtue when it comes to building motors - any motors. Best of luck!

PS: Go cruise the antique stores in the area and clear your mind; or drive up to Fredericksburg for lunch or a beer. beerchug.gif
