does this mean that apple went with licensing???? or is it a honor-system based thing? also have a family pack....somebody clue me in....

You have to buy it to use it. Just like any other software program. But if you have one house with multiple macs you can get the family pack and install it on multiple legally.
Pretty standard software licensing.

Apple hasn't ever required a license on any consumer OS. I don't see them doing it any time soon...
FWIW, I'm using Tiger, and it DOES NOT requre any license code to install. The Server version does though...
(I'm an Apple Select-Premier Developer...so yes, I'm ALLOWED to have it.)

so no activation like XP....okie....i'll buy the fam pack so i can use my pismo and my TiBook.....

Just buy a single copy...it covers YOU on two machines. If it was you, and 3 other PEOPLE, you'd need the fam pack.
