Full Version: Some slightly 914 OT....still Porsche mid engine

So now I am confused...isn't a mid engine 911 called a Cayman?

I admit that this new mid-engine GTE/GTLM Porsche 911 RSR has me confused. I guess I don't understand the rules. Since when can you change the position of the engine? Are mid-engine Corvettes and Aston Martins next in this class? And no, I am not talking about the rumored future mid-engine C8 Corvette or the Adrian Newey designed Aston Martin supercar.
I believe the answer is that these are "purpose built" race cars that have very little in common anymore with the road cars.
Likely zero parts could be exchanged.
Not like the old days (i.e. the 70's).
So even though it's called an RSR, don't confuse it with it's rear engine brethren.
If Porsche is doing this....it must be allowed per the race rules for the series that Porsche plans on running this car.
I think it's great.
It's about time Porsche got away from the rear engine platform for "all out" racing.
I think they lost a few races in recent years by using the rear engine layout.
Much more GT1, 962 and hey 914-ish now.

FabCar built a mid engine 911 in the 90s for IMSA
"In the mid 1990’s Dave approached IMSA with the idea of building a tube frame mid-engine 911 GT car. They insisted that he maintain the stock 911 wheelbase, front and rear overhangs and stock roofline. He was also limited to a 3.4 litre engine. Stock 911’s were running 3.8 litre engines at the time. "

The 911GT1 was theoretically a mid-engine 911.
Supposedly the Powers That Be issued a ruling that Porsche was allowed to move the engine significantly forward in the chassis. Could be mid-engined, or could be just moved forward. Or could be something they are thinking about doing in the future and this is still a rear-engined car...
