Mine has been on my car since 1980 also. I have it mounted through the sun visor holes.

Mine mounts to the roll cage. There are brackets specifically for this. IIRC the mirror comes with simple L brackets.
Mine makes the side view mirrors redundant. 
Mine is a four panel. Elliot's is a five. Four panels can mount up higher since they are shorter if that is a consideration.
There on sale right now for $19.98 at Pep Boys. It's the Elliot 5 panel special. Weird... on my computer the image is upright.

I can mount it higher but then I'm looking at the top of the targa bar.
