Own a 74 2.0. Replacing the fuel filter. Current one has no hose clamps and diagram on web shows no hose clamps. Just want to make sure I don't need them since these cars are already fairly flammable.

Most definitely use good quality high pressure style hose clamps!

Use approved fuel line band clamps,not screw thread clamps,they cut into the hose and put you and yours in risk...ok.

You need the proper size fuel injection hose clamp, IIRC there are two different sizes on the pump and filter, many FLAP sell an assortment kit.



VW used the push-on no clamp braided hose on carb and I believe they may have done this on the low pressure side of FI systems. The cloth braid available from VW shops sucks quality wise and will totally self destruct if you use ethanol gas.
Any aftermarket hose must have a clamp.

BTW the only hose I use without clamps is Parker Push Lok (matching hose and fitting) for oil lines.

Fair enough.... I deleted my comments above.

Don't take me as gospel on the FI low pressure side having no clamps, I'm not 100% on that.

But on carb cars like the type one engined beetle, bus and T3, using OE german braided hose I am 100% sure VW never used hose clamps of any type. Pushed on far enough you couldn't get the hose back off without cutting it. Did this for years, never an issue.
I no longer use this hose as I see it cracking in as little as one year even with pure gas. Haven't seen a failure do to this cracking, but I'm taking no chances.

Now I only use SAE 30R9 even for carbs.
