Rick just called. He's 30 miles west of Albuquerque and his water pump is failing. He has water and is going to try to get her here, but Nico and I are on stand by with the Burb and a strong rope.

I guess he'll be a house guest for a couple of days.

Any one have a 928 water pump you can overnight?
Jenny
Sucks! It's a good thing he's got club members to depend on. Good luck... unsure.gif

have devek overnight a pump. i hear they are the 928 gurus....
ThinAir
Bummer! When I saw him this afternoon he was mildly concerned about the oil burning, but he commented that water temps were right where he wanted them. I'm glad he got as far as he did. If needed, there are probably more resources in Albuquerque than here in Flagstaff.

This is for Rick: headbang.gif headbang.gif

It's OK. It's just a water pump and he has a place to stay for as long as it takes.
Series9
He's made it into ABQ. About 12 miles to go.

Update soon...
SirAndy
oh that sucks ... didn't he replace that pump lascht year ???

unsure.gif Andy
ThinAir
When he told me today about last year's incident it sounded like he had checked the water pump and it was fine so I think he only did the oil pump.
Series9
He has arrived at our house safely! No worries...nothing that can not be fixed.

Good news! Only 45 minutes behind schedule - that's not too bad! clap.gif
rick 918-S
The pump was a reman. I installed it late last summer. This is the last thing I expected. Joe and I are going to hunt for a replacement tomorrow. It couldn't of happened in a better place.
ablose58
good luck rick smilie_pokal.gif I hope the rest of your journey goes uneventful!!!!!AL
MJHanna
Call Russ Kelso. He might have one laying around.
jim912928
If devek doesn't have one (unlikely)...you can also try one of these 928 specialty places:

928 Specialists: http://www.928gt.com/

or

928 International: http://www.mailordercentral.com/928intl/

All play in the 928 space exclusively.

Good luck!
CptTripps
You are right...it couldn't have happened in a better place. Joe is an AWESOME guy, and I'm sure you two will come up with something...remember to take pics!

What 'year' engine is that? I'm trying to call some people around here, but I need to know what year the engine is.

There is a place called VertexAuto (1-866-668-0660) that has new OEM pumps for $175. (no core)

Here's the pic from their site.

That's just from poking around...let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

You could just swap him engines Joe. lol2.gif

Rick, while you have the front of the engine in view. Would you take a photo of how you did away with the oil fill tube that went down the front of the engine. I know when we redid the pan it loses that feature but I can not remember how you did away with the hose that comes off the top of the engine to it. Also how you plugged where it comes off the breather deal. Thanks Larry

Joe,

One of my friends owns 928 International in Anaheim. Let me know what you need and I will get it overnighted. Call me with details.

Dan
SLITS
Or call APC (Automotive Parts Center) in Ontario, CA and ask for Jayme.....The are OE to Porsche of North America for rebuilding water and smog pumps. I don't know if he will have it in stock or not.

If you do call, tell him Ron Meier of Recycler Core told you to call him.

I don't have his number with me (stuck at home in da snow).

Good Luck
Gint
Rick'll have it on the road before you know it.
Dave_Darling
Damn, that is way cool! Within hours, he has two "insiders" offering deals from large reputable vendors!

If I were tied into the sales end of things in Birdland, I'd check to see if we have any on hand... It's times like this that make me wish I were. sad.gif

Unfortunately this is not an easy job for a 928 motor. the timing belt is the driver for the water pump and oil pump and of course both cams

27 bolts that just hold the pump to the block. Not to mention the brittle plastic covers and other crap that has to come off. Tensioning the belt is critical. too much tension and the pump seals will go out quickly. to loose and you can jump a tooth on a cam. Porsche has a 300 dollar tool to adjust belt tension . I only did this job once and did it by tightening the belt till it could be just twisted 90 degrees (between the tensioner and the passenger side cam gear. 500 miles it should be checked and re adjusted for a new belt.
1000 bucks at the dealer.
CptTripps
Yeah, but Rick could build that engine in his sleep....

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts he's on the road tomorrow afternoon.
tesserra
That critical tension adjustment is most likely why the pump went bad.
Could Rick rent or borrow that tensioning tool from someone?

George

Here's the carnage. The water pump is fucked. It was boring into the block.

We have a pump on its way from CA. A huge thanks to XITSPD (Dan Callicot) for that one.

We'll have the car on the road tomorrow. (Porsche tensioning tools are for people who don't know cam belts).

Cool to hear that everything is working out so far !!! If y'all need anything from the Amarillo direction, lemme know !! If the Alien might be coming through Amarillo by any chance Friday evening, I would LOVE to see it !!!! I'll PM numbers just in case anything happens ......
Mike D.
Damn Rick! your awsome smilie_pokal.gif you too, Joe, good work...
Hope all works out great...

I like that big f'n hammer there in front of Rick...

Getting ribbed by 914 purists for having an access panel cut in the firewall…. somewhat annoying…… not having to drop the motor for an emergency repair…… Priceless!

I wonder if the machining of the block by the impeller will change the flow dynamics.

Incidentally, I drive around New Mexico, not through it. I’ve only had two major breakdowns driving thousands and thousands of miles throughout the US. Transmission blew just outside Albuquerque, and had a catalytic converter plug up and blow back into the engine in Las Cruces.

Good luck getting it fixed.

Exactly what I was thinking, giving the new clearances. And a good radiator flush is definitely in order, getting all of those shavings in the rad. could spell disaster!

"Another alien vehicle crash landed in New Mexico"..........what is it with that place? hide.gif

Yep, Curvie, I'm way too far away to check on the 'ol girl this time!!!

I'm sure glad this didn't happen when Rick was getting close to Flagstaff - it started raining about an hour ago and now it has changed over to snow! Doing this work at my place in this weather would not have been fun at all!
rick 918-S
Thanks all, Dan pulled some strings and the pump is on it's way. Were hanging out here. Went to Nikko's place for lunch, Great food!

Dan, I can't thank you enough! pray.gif aktion035.gif mueba.gif

That's naaasty. Good luck on the replacement part, it is true you couldn't have run into trouble in a better spot. Joe is a good friend to have!
PorscheTom
Ouch! That's some picture of damage. The grinding of the water pump gears into the block is why Porsche changed to plastic pump vanes on the later pumps. Some places would tell you to get a new block with the damage I saw in that picture. I hope it cools ok still as there will now be a clearance between the pump vanes and the block that was not there before that might affect pressurizing the system.

I've owned two 928's myself, a '86.5 S and a '78 and had enough. Someone earlier posted about the belt tension, I'm sure Rick knows all about that, but it is VERY important to these engines.

Good luck with your repair Rick!

Regards,
Tom

The level of knowledge around here makes me laugh out loud... we don't need no stinking help!

(well, I do, and that's what you are all here for... wink.gif)

Seems like the clearance would be an issue... hmm..

is the block going to survive???? ohmy.gif

euro 928's were interferance motors right?
jim912928
Yes, euro 928 engines and all 32V 928 engines are interference. Only the US 16V engines are non-interference.
SLITS
Rich....

I just talked to our water pump expert from APC and showed him the images. He said it looks like the reman pump you installed had the impeller height set 1/32 - 1/16" to deep toward the block or the bearing was fitted to loose. With bearing failure (walking), the impeller can only move a few 32nds of an inch prior to the drive pulley hitting the bearing housing on the pump (this would limit the amount of digging into the block).

Problems... With the wear on the water pump housing, the impeller could have a tendency to cavitate due to excess clearance....watch your cooling carefully...

I didn't want to be the bearer of bad news but thought you might want this information.

What the heck is an interference engine? confused24.gif

John
jim912928
John, like most 928 engines....an interference engine means the valves will hit the piston tops when they are either off (belt slips) or not moving (belt breaks) and the pistons continue to move....thus they "interfere". Always means big buckaroos!

Yep, my 1st Audi V6 toasted 30 sodium filled valves. One top snapped completely off and imbedded in the head...

Rich,
you are the "man" making most "big" problems trivial...
Joe Ricard
I don't think many engines these days are non-interferance.
The block of a Euro motor 4.7L is the same as any other. The power comes from heads, Pistons, cams and intake system. In fact you could get a old 78 U.S. block 4.5L and have it bored (correctly) and be good to go. All the stroke were the same till the GTS.

ah-HA,

My sister- in-law got the "interference" lesson with a new 944,(ruby red, 87' if I remember right). She had put off the scheduled maintence (read here timing belt replacement).... sad.gif ended up batting her eyelashes at the service manager and got it covered under warranty... driving-girl.gif
thus avoiding a BIG BILL.

I was aware of the concept but not that term.

Thanks,
