i cant find it,and need it for a sale.if i dont find it how do i make sure its not a a bus engine ?

The number would be on the fan shroud of a 912E engine, I believe.
A Bus engine would have four-stud heads, while a 912E engine would have three-stud heads just like the 2.0 914 heads. Because the engine is a 2.0 914 engine.

Its on the shroud to the left of the timing hole. Just about even with the oil cooler. Kind of a waste because the shroud can be changed in an hour.... lol

I have owned 3 912Es and now have #265 and Dave and Steve are correct, There is no # on the engine , it is on the fan shroud.
