Mine hasn't done that for years
Tell him to put it up on jackstands. Cures the problem every time! I'd say shift fork adjustment??

Adjust the clutch, check the transmission mounts (mine were all loose), adjust the linkage. Watch out for dog food in the tunnel

It can be all the above.. but:
if the slider is worn out...it will pop out
if the synchro band is worn out.. it will pop out
if the dog teeth just barely exist.. it will pop out
Any combination of the above will cause it.

I've got the same issue, but stays in gears if I gently hold the shift lever while in first.
Any recommendations for inspection/repair ?

It is either the synchro ring (75.00) or the slider (575.00) Typically is it both. But you might get away with the ring. Bare min.. replace the dog teeth and the synchro ring. Once it comes apart..you'll know if you have to replace the slider. Look for worn teeth on the dog teeth and slider.. we have pics when you are ready.
