Is this a side-shift or tail-shift?

Its in a 74' 914, but the car is a frankenstein of many years.

I think its a side shift but couldn't find any pictures that made me completely confident in my opinion.

That's a side-shifter. A tail shifter would run past that all the way to the back of the rear of the housing.

Yes it's a sideshift, a rebuilt one by someone that used nylocks when putting the case back together. It's wrong in may ways...

If the shift linkage goes into the transmission in front of the intermediate plate, it's a side-shifter.

If the shift linkage goes into the transmission through the side of the end-piece, it's a tail-shifter.

Thanks for the clarification.

It shifts quite terribly. Seems the position of gears is constantly changing. I'm guessing at the least its going to need new linkage bushings, coupler bushings, and cone screws.

Is the JWest setup regarded as a quality product?

Anyone with long term or track use on the JWest setup?

Jwest's rennshifter is a very high quality product but it won't make a trans in need of a rebuild into a good trans.

Thanks.

Working my way thru Dr. Evils transmission guide.

Your clutch cable guide wheel bracket appears to be hanging very low.
Is it properly attached ? Clutch adjusted properly ?
Could contribute to your shifting issues.

That is done to clear the headers. Or at least that is why I did it on my old 914.

I'll double check it but I believe its to clear the headers.

Just got this project car. Working thru alot of things.

No grinding into reverse. No popping out of gear. Main problem is finding the gears. Currently favoring bushings, cone screws and roll pins as the culprit.
